My deepest sympathy and prayers to her family. Nancy was a friend that will truly be remembered by her kindness, loving spirit, and funny nature. A short story: Nancy knows how much my family and I love the beach and Charleston. One day when we were at lunch she gave me a small gift of a North Caronlina/South Carolina map; this map has been called the "Nancy Cheek route" in my family. The map highlights the route Nancy took to Mt. Pleasant/Charleston, SC along with the best places to grab a bite to eat, the cleanest bathrooms and best gas stations. We take this route every time we go to SC and think of Nancy. We love you and will miss you Nancy.

My Prayers are with the family. Nancy was an awesome woman! She was one of my favorite people at the Law school. She was very kind and very funny. She always made me feel welcome. She would call me and my colleagues IT Gurus every time we went to assist her. I love you Nancy! I know God is happy to have you as an angel. I saved the last email she sent me. It is inspiration for me to continue to help others.
With Love,
~Joshua Hill

I met Nancy while working at Duke Law School. Her beautiful southern accent and charm always made me feel right at home and proud to be southern. She always had a smile, cheery words, and a wonderful story to brighten your day. She took time to show kindness to everyone, such a wonderful expression of God and love for all.

We will remember Nancy's beautiful smile, warmth, and spirit - seeing her in the halls of the law school always made the day that much better. She was a lovely person. Our condolences to her family, and gratitude for her time with us.

I worked with Nancy at the Law School for 11 years. I loved that she loved the coast. One of my favorite memories of her was upon asking her on a Monday if she had a good weekend and she replied, "Oh yes, I polished my silver." Pure Nancy. Always kind to all of us. I wish her family peace, and to know that I had a smile on my face remembering her - isn't that what any of us could want for our own memories and for our loved ones when we pass?

I spent my last accidental visit with Nancy in the University Mall Harris-Teeter grocery store Saturday, two weeks ago. As I searched for high-fat, high calorie, non-"hearty", Cream of Mushroom soup, she searched the same "modernized" shelving for good old "regular" Tomato soup. It was sorta like playing a big slot machine. As the cans rolled out of the soup runways, we started to laugh at the ridiculous and grandiose nature of the bulky and colorful delivery system (which also made it hard to put anything back, I assume by design). We grappled with the multiple different and confusing offerings with tiny print saying what was really in them. It's amazing what chicken and rice has come too- well worth the search just to marvel at the range of titles! And as I have come to learn, Nancy, with that quick wit, yet kind humor, made it loads of fun. I came away with four cans of the wrong "flavor" and had to return them the next week. Nancy was not there and I missed her....

Nancy was one of the first to sign up for a class I was teaching at church called Hearts for God. She was an active participant in the class and brought joy and humor to everyone in the class. It was with much sadness that I learned of Nancy's death and I feel a real loss as she touched my life and those all around here with her special gifts of love, caring and service. When I think of Nancy, I see God's grace in her and I hope I too can share that with those around me as Nancy did. Jane Campbell Faith Community Nurse, UUMC.

Nancy was a real " Southern Belle ". She loved God, her family, and her friends. She told funny stories, especially about her Mother, and knew how to fill the room with laughter. What a blessing! She will be missed.

Nancy and I worked together at Duke Law school, and you could not ask for a better coworker. She was upbeat, energetic and very helpful...and thoughtful! I remember her coming across the hall just to share a slice of an apple she had started because it was so delicious; she was generous and kind! For many years, Nancy played Mrs. Claus at Duke Law's annual holiday event at Duke Children's Hospital. She was PERFECT...red clogs and all. The children adored her. In so many ways, Nancy will be missed! -- Stephanie De Falco

As a part-time faculty member at Duke Law, Nancy was a wonderful person, who assisted me in any way she could, even though she might not be assigned to assist me. That did not matter to Nancy, she was there to help. She was charming and sincere. She was helpful to everyone. I will miss going over and past her office to say hi. My sincere condolences to her family and her Duke family.

Nancy started working at the law school right around the time my daughter Maggie was born in 1998. I first met Nancy as I walked around the law school, baby Maggie in arm, and Nancy always loved seeing her as she grew, and always asked about her. When Maggie started her years of school fundraisers, selling candy, wrapping paper, and assorted junk, Nancy was always her most loyal and enthusiastic customer. She made Maggie feel like a great entrepreneur and salesperson. Maggie still remembers Nancy fondly, and not just as a sure sale. The law school won't be the same without Nancy's warm smile and southern charm.

Nancy was a cherished member of our book club for 16 years. She was the ultimate storyteller and would have our club in stitches. Although her friends are so very sad now, her stories will stay with us forever and always make us laugh.....what a wonderful legacy.

Genuine is the word that comes to mind for Nancy. What a blessing she was to us at Passport Motors. Her smile lit up the office when she came to see us. Betsy, I can't thank you enough for coming by and sharing with us yesterday. I am still stunned by the loss. She was here with us Friday, laughing, talking, sharing stories. We love you Nancy Cheek, you are and always will be a part of our family. Our thoughts and prayers of comfort are with the family.

I have so very many wonderful memories of Nancy. Dozens of happy evenings in my den or her living room hosting book group meetings. Sharing Nancy's joy of serving her friends delicious food on her good china, using cloth napkins and her sterling silver. I will never forget Nancy graciously charming my extended family at my daughter's high school graduation lunch and doing so again four years later at her college graduation party. One of the best afternoons of my life was sharing lunch and laughter with Nancy and Alice at Alice's home -- an elegant, charming and memorable occasion; perfect in every way. And then there was the time Nancy ran over the pumpkin in my driveway! I could go on and on. Nancy has been a important part of every milestone event of my life for the past 18 years. I will love her and miss her always.
