I knew the moment I met Jay and the girls this was a special kind of father. It was many years ago, and the girls were very young, but Jay wanted me to teach them to play golf. We had so much fun and I fell in love with them almost instantly It was that wide smile and playful manner that Jay always had ready that truly drew me to him and when I met Ginger, the puzzle was complete. Y'all are a special family and you had a very loving father, husband and friend. He now watches from above with the "ever cold" adult beverage in his hand and that big smile eating with pride. The putts are finally dropping for him and the tee shots are long and straight. You will be missed every day and by every person with whom you came in contact.
Thanks for allowing me to enjoy so many fun memories with you. Ginger, Katie & Brooke I hope your memories are vibrant and will comfort you as your work thru the grief and shock of such a tragic loss.
Much love..........Dona Lerner

As one of the neighborhood crew, I was lucky enough to have gotten to know Jay Kessing when I was growing up in Chapel Hill. In High School, I got to know his caustic wit and cheerful banter. He had a way of pointing out his friend's minor faults with fierce acumen. And we couldn't get enough of it. Jay was the one guy we always wanted to be around because he was always cracking us up. As a group of friends we had a lot of great times but none ever better than when Jay was around.
I moved away from Chapel Hill and have not seen Jay in about 26 years but I ran into him in Carrboro in 1990, shortly before I moved. When I saw him, I half-expected him to crack on me or give me a hard time about something but of course he didn't, he was really friendly and made me laugh - I remembered then what a great guy Jay was, and how he always kept a smile on our faces. I have so many great memories of him that I will never forget -

Growing up with my first cousins Brooke and Katie it was always obvious the strong relationship they had with my Uncle Jay. Their close relationship with their dad was reflected through the constant joking and laughs they shared. Because my Uncle's death was short notice, I failed to grasp the idea that he is no longer here with me. As I began to come to terms with the situation I thought of one of the many things I will miss the most.
When my Nannie and Papa (Dixie and David King) lived in North Carolina they would always have the Kings and the Kessings at their house for lunch. Before we ate we always said the blessing I learned in pre-school. Holding hands we would sing, "God we thank you, God we thank you, for our food, for our food ā¦ etc." We haven't stopped singing this blessing at our family gatherings to this day, and we can never get through it without looking up at least once with a smile and a laugh. I will miss seeing my uncles smiling face across the table from me. I know he would want us to continue singing the same old blessing. However, as much as I want the blessing to sound the same, I know it will have a different tune without my Uncle Jay.

Words cannot describe how hard this is. The good news is that Jay is now among the angels. I will miss his laugh, his smile and his raised eyebrow when caught by Jay saying or doing something that didn't sit quite right with him. I will miss his warm greeting of "Hey Sue Sue"..... Love him forever. My love to all the Kessings. Go Heels. Love, Susan

Knowing Jay Jay (that is what I called him) was a such privilege. A happy guy, always with a smile on his face, ready to shake your hand and ask how your were doing. A very proud father and devoted husband is the impression I got from him every time we spoke.
When we lose a friend it tugs on your heart and puts a pit in your stomach. The tug and the pit will last a long time because of Jay Jay's passing.
All your friends down on earth Jay Jay hope your drives are long and straight and your putts short and easy.

Dear Kessing Family,
I'm one of the "Poe kids" who lived half a block up the street on Elliott Road. Jay was in my class, though my family moved from Elliott in the early 70s. Jay was in several of my classes in elementary school. I especially remember him in my 4th grade, styling Haggar slacks! He was a sharp dressed man, even as a 9-year old. I remember a few conversations with him about coming from St. Thomas Moore school and "the whole Catholic thing." We were just kids being friends. He was always, ALWAYS a "good guy" to me....and to everyone else, too. I was so saddened to hear of his passing. My love and thoughts to his family and close friends. I can't think of my own life growing up on Elliott Road, without including Jay in the cast of characters and for that I am most grateful Love to the family....
