I have so many found memories of our times together at school, scouts, band, and most of all neighborhood playing time. Elena has always had a special place in my heart and I wish we had not lost touch over the years as she was a good friend and I will cherish our times together forever. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. RIP Elena, love you!

Dear Emerick and Patterson Families,
It is with great sorrow that we learned of Elena's passing. We have wonderful memories of the Emerick family from years ago when all our boys were young and growing up on Clearwater Lake Rd. Elena was indeed a very kind soul with a warm, loving heart. We see these traits in Rowan and Eli, along with her keen intellect. We are praying for the Peace of Christ that she has found to ease your sorrows so that you may heal and enjoy fond memories of her. Elena will be greatly missed, but we know that some glorious day we shall meet again.
Yours in Christ,
Michael and Kathy Cox

Dear Patterson Family,
Sadly, I learned of Elena's death from my mother, who read her obituary in the Durham Herald-Sun while I was at work. I just can't believe it. Immediately I had to reach out to Robin, Tracy, and Janet, who lived with her, as I did, in Granville Towers and then, withTracy and me, at Old Well. I don't know where Valerie is but I want to find her and let her know, in case she is unaware.
So many thoughts crowded my mind when I learned of her death. We lost touch after Tracy and I moved to Estes Park; we were at odds. Then I saw her again, years later, at the Mothers of Multiples yard sale, where she was shopping and I was working. I then learned of her boys, and I saw on her face that they gave her joy.
She was such a smart girl, but I felt she was always striving for something that was just out of reach. Tracy and I, and our other friends, couldn't make her happy. That made us sad.
At this knowledge of her passing we are all sad again. There is an un-named closeness that comes from living together in college, a time characterized by many-faceted development, acquiring of self-knowledge, a lot of angst, and, for many of us, disappointment. Somehow I felt that Elena was mostly disappointed.
My heart just breaks to learn of her death. To think of her boys without their mother. I lost my husband when my kids were 16. It has been a hard road for them, and I hope her boys have the strength to understand their mother's love and to cope with the loss of her everyday presence.
Much love to your family; as I said before, this news has broken my heart.

Ed, Edna, Evan, and Erin...and her sons..
Just learned of Elena. My heart is crushed. I remember when I first moved to Shelby (2nd) grade, Elena be-friended me in the neighborhood (St. Mary Catholic Church) and school. Then y'all moved. :( So glad we were the same age, and remained friends for years, but had lost touch since High School. Very intelligent and out going, excelling in everything she did. Traits that you, Ed and Edna, passed on to her, and no doubt she passed on to her son's.
I rode through the old neighborhood just 4 days ago; thought of y'all and of the fun she and I had; especially on the embankment on the side of your old house, of the once dirt road. It made me smile, laugh, and think of the simpler times, not knowing of her passing.
My husband, Elena and I graduated the same year. Knowing words can never express our deepest sympathies to comfort all your grief; but just keep the happy times and fond memories close, can ease the pain and warm the heart. We want to send out thoughts and prayers to you all.

Not only was Elena (and all the Pattersons) a neighbor, she tutored me in math one summer and took me to and from SHS in her VW bug for a least a year. We were in the fun, award-winning SHS band together and in marching season Elena was in charge of the rifles (can't remember what they were called but they were the girls who twirled fake guns as though they were batons). Elena had that group effectively whipped into shape. They were perfectly in sync and made our band look really tight adding to the reason that we won awards.Elena worked hard in everything that she did and graduated number three in her SHS class, no small feat given how smart that class was. She was an extremely determined and goal-oriented teenager for sure! Though I lost touch with her over the years her obituary shows that she went on to contribute significantly to her community and family. I'm so sorry that her life seems to have ended MUCH too early. My condolences to you, her family.May you grieve and celebrate well this precious life.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Mauney Baggerly

Elena was my Girl Scout leader, and became a true friend. She was the first adult in my life who saw me as a person and treated me like one, not just a kid. She was generous to my family when we went through a difficult time. I will always remember her laugh, her spirit, and her kindness. I am thankful to have called her my friend.

Elena was so intelligent, kind and generous. She was one of the favorite adults of my oldest son when he was little, and if it weren't for her loving kindness and care of me during my pregnancy, I wouldn't have my younger son. I will always remember her humor and willingness to help anyone in need. My deepest sympathies to all of you and may you find peace in the memories you keep. Our family sends our thoughts and prayers to all of you.
