Obituary of Dorothy McKinnie Pannell-Martin

Dorothy "Dot" McKinnie Pannell Martin (born 6/10/1935), 81 years old, beloved wife of Clyde H. Martin, died on May 9, 2017. A memorial service will be held June 10 at Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Chapel Hill, NC, with the Reverend Barrett Freeman officiating. There will be a private burial at the Mt. Carmel Church Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being made by Walkers Funeral Home of Chapel Hill, NC. Dot graduated from Lambert High School in Lambert Mississippi where she was salutatorian of her class, a cheerleader, football queen, basketball star, and student government leader. She was crowned "Miss Quitman County" and Mississippi State Farm Bureau Queen. She received her bachelor's degree with honors from Mississippi College, where she was "Miss Mississippi College," and active in many college activities. Her master's degree was from Ole Miss (University of Mississippi). Dot was director of Food Service for Chapel Hill- Carrboro (NC) City Schools (1962-64), taught at the University of Maryland, was assistant director of Food Service for Prince George's (MD) County Schools, and retired in 1995 as Director of Food Service for Fairfax County (VA) Schools. Dot served a one-year appointment for the United States Department of Agriculture where she led the Nutrition and Technical Services Department in publishing guidance manuals. Dot is the author of many states' departments of education guidance manuals, and authored several training manuals and textbooks, including Financial Management for Food Service Industry and School Foodservice Management for the 21st Century, which have six editions. Many college students and leaders in the industry consider this textbook "the Bible". Professionally Dot will be remembered for her contribution to the school foodservice industry through her writing, speaking, and training of thousands. Dot started VEPA Consulting Company in 1981, later renamed inTEAM Associates, and retired from her company in 2003 when the company was sold. After living in Maryland and Virginia for 40 years, she and her husband, Clyde, moved to Aiken, SC in 2003. She was active in the Women of Woodside, served as president in 2008 and in several leadership positions, and worked with Habitat for Humanity in Women Built houses. She and Clyde moved to Chapel Hill, NC in 2016, where she was active in the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. She was ordained a deacon and was secretary of Women on Missions. In 2016 Dot was recognized with the School Nutrition Association and FAME Lifetime Achievement award in San Diego, CA. Earlier in her career Dot received the National Restaurant Association Silver Plate Award. Dot was an only child and was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband Clyde Martin, daughter Katherine Duncan of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and son Stephen VanEgmond and his wife Mary of Orlando, Florida. Her stepdaughter, Julia Kay Cashion and her husband, Dr. Donald Cashion of Virginia Beach, Virginia, preceded her in death. She is survived by six grandchildren—Lily and Tori VanEgmond of Orlando, Florida, Alex and Neal Duncan of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Caroline Cashion and Ali Huffman of Virginia Beach,Virginia.
