Obituary of Roger Neil Stephenson

Roger was born on 11/23/1937 in Santé Fe, New Mexico to William Carl and Vora Ella Stephenson. He died at home on May 14, 2017. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Lucile Thomas Stephenson and two infant sons, Randy Neil Stephenson and Michael Stephenson. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara (Bobbie) Alford Stephenson, and children, Elizabeth Oberacker and husband William, Terri Jane Emerson, Brenda Kay Spruill and husband Adam, Lucy Ann Stephenson and John Wesley Stephenson and wife Tabatha and wonderful grandchildren: Charles Richard Atkinson, Kayla Ann Atkinson, Nicole Christine Abernathy, Andrew Nixon Spruill, Alyssa Joy Emerson, Alexander Neil Spruill, Brianna Kasey Spruill and Hayden Avery, and great grandchild, Claire Serenity. He also had numerous loving Nieces and Nephews. Roger served his country for 20 years in the US Navy. He was stationed in many locations, including Charleston Naval Base Training Center, Bermuda, Memphis, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach, as a Radioman on many submarines throughout his career. Roger served his community with many years of volunteer work with the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Hillsborough Youth Athletic Association. He was in charge of the fund raising at Grady Brown School for many years. He drove an Orange County School Bus for over 15 years. Family will receive friends on Thursday 05/18/2017 at 6:30 pm at Walkers Funeral Home in Hillsborough. Memorial service will be held at 8:00 following the visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor his memory and legacy by making contributions to the Hillsborough Youth Athletic Association, PO Box 577 Hillsborough, NC 27278.
