His name was Robert Henry McLendon. Affectionately called “The GOAT” by Aidan, Bob by others. For most of us, however, he was simply Paw Paw- these are the collective memories of his six grandchildren.
The last few days have evoked for me the following words by Lemony Snicket:
“It is a curious thing, the death of a loved one. We all know that our time in this world is limited, and yet it is always a surprise when it happens to someone we know. It is like walking up the stairs to your bedroom in the dark, and thinking there is one more stair than there is. Your foot falls down, through the air, and there is a sickly moment of dark surprise as you try and readjust the way you thought of things.”
For the past few days, like many here today, we have stood with our foot precariously poised above the top stair, remembering the past and holding onto memories; readjusting our perspective as we try to move forward.
Many of us recall fishing trips with PawPaw. Afternoons spent lazily sitting on a riverbank, enjoying each others company or sharing laughter at the memory of him falling out of the boat. He’d generously and patiently bait the hooks for us, though the afternoons would usually culminate in the tadpoles being taken home as house pets, instead of bait.
We’d recycle aluminum cans, and he’d take us- splashing through parking lot puddles all the way- to use the change we’d earned [from the cans] to buy ICEEs.
We learned to drive early as he was willing to take us to abandoned parking lots and let us drive as soon as our feet could reach the pedals or on his lap if they could not.
We fondly remember afternoons spent in his workshop. The sweet smell of sawdust would fill the air as Hank Williams Jr. and Randy Travis played softly in the background. His shop was a sanctuary for all of us, with all of our heights meticulously marked on the wall by the door. In this space he would craft wooden baby carriages, checkerboards, trucks- what we could provide a drawing of, he could bring to life.
Afternoons were spent playing hide-and-seek amongst the citrus trees in their backyard and working alongside him in the garden. Once, planting an oak tree (affectionately known as the Amber and Brandy tree) that would grow alongside us over the years. We shot BB guns and captured lizards- life at PawPaws embodied that of a true American childhood.
He demonstrated his love of God to us through nightly devotions, his example of daily reading in his Living Bible, his constant prayers for each of us here in this room, his regular attendance at Tuesday morning men’s Bible studies and his and Mama Ann’s devotion to visiting those in the Lakeland community who were unable to make it to church
He demonstrated his love of family- a tight connection with his parents and siblings who he visited often when he was able, through his devotion to Mama Ann (giving her pecks, compliments, and smacks right in front of us), his love and grace to his children and grandchildren, by showing up for each of us- taking us to shows, picking us up from school, and driving to our weddings (even when it probably wasn’t safe to drive so far any longer) and loving and delighting in all of his great-grandchildren.
I like to think that for all of the memories PawPaw gifted to us, that we were able to present him with one final, perfect memory- an Easter Sunday spent surrounded by loved ones on an unseasonably warm Sunday afternoon, soaking in the North Carolina sunshine and enjoying a cigar or two.
People rush to get rid of grief because they see it as hanging onto loss. But grief is really hanging onto love, which is why you always feel it.
1 Corinthians 13:13 says, “There are three things that remain—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.” Paw Paw embraced faith, hope and love in his life and they will each remain with us in our memories of him. We will forever remember his unique sense of humor, and all of the wonderful conversations and memories that we shared. He was the best grandfather that we could have imagined and we are so grateful for his love and presence in our lives.

Thank you for being the best grandfather and loving us like you did! Thankful for all of the memories we have and especially thankful that you taught us early on the importance of church and showed us what being a godly man looked like! Because of the man you were and your guidance I know I will see you again. I love you!

Robert will be missed by all who ever knew him. I met Robert and Annelle at the Lakes Church in Laleland and fell in love with both of them. Robert and I were born near the same location in Alabama, so he always called me his Alabama cousin. He will be
Gods right hand man because he loved the lord and served him well. Praying for all the family during this trying time.

Robert was active in our Sunday School class, Seekers 2
until he had to go to the nursing home! He was a Deacon and always ready to help anyone and pray anytime he was called on! I enjoyed visiting with him and his wife, Annelle! He was a great example of a Christian man! He will be missed!
