Herta and I were truly (BFFs) best female friends since 2009! Herta and I met as neighbors and within months we were partners in friendship and community (and a bit of mischief). We shared fun, stories, walks and exercise, projects, games, friendships, parties, puzzles, shopping, pedicures, learning, errands, tasks, chores, and family. For 7 years, through 2016 we saw each other nearly every day.
Meeting and quickly becoming friends with this charming, sweet, and gentle lady is one of the best things to happen to me. Getting to know her family, enriched my life, and sharing small adventures brought both of us laughter and learning. When she started to slip into dementia, her son's wonderful love, support and consistency was outstanding as they supported excellent care through Veronica, Janet, and Basilia. That steady care slowed dementia’s progress and kept her secure and comfortable at home. After dementia started, we shared "family meals" with Herta and her caregivers until Covid made us stop. Despite the sad journey into memory loss, she laughed, and loved, and continued to learn (she became a decent dominoes player thanks to her caregivers’ lessons). Though Covid made her 100th birthday a virtual event, she had fun and smiled as she celebrated her big day beautifully orchestrated and shared with her family and caregivers.
It is sad when good things end. I miss your presence, my dear friend, Herta, but your love continues through the amazing memories and smiles we shared. I loved so much the friendship, learning, joys and growing wiser with you! What a wonderful gift you were to many and how lucky I was to be among them.
