Mary Ellen, We are heartbroken to just hear of Ken’s passing. What a big loss for all of us - we’ll miss his sense of humor, his loving heart. Oh dear one, I wish I was with you now. I know the hole in your life is huge. We are going to try and find you so we can talk. We’re in Florida now. Travel is very difficult for Gerald with his MS but we hope to get back to NC in June. Mary Ellen, I love you guys. Thank you so much for joining my family as we celebrated Jessica's wedding at Phoebe's house last May. That's when this photo was taken. It meant so much to me that you both were there and at the wedding too. Ken was already sick then but one would never have known it. I remember the dinners at my house and at yours, with lots of lively conversation and camaraderie, not to mention wine and great food! I will continue to cherish those memories. In memory of Ken ...

I have known Ken since we were in grade school together and I remember the sweet and generous kid who was always much better behaved than I was. In high school he had a blonde crew cut, an easy manner and a sense of humor we all envied (why couldn't we be as smart and as funny?). When we reconnected as adults I was not surprised to see that his marvelous sense of humor as well as his kind and generous heart had grown with him. It was clear to me that, above all else, Ken valued his family and friends. He was focused on what really mattered and you could see it in his eyes when he looked at Mary Ellen or spoke about his children and their families. He loved and was loved in return -- which really is the secret to a successful life. Rest in peace old friend. You are deeply loved and missed.

Mary Ellen, I'm not sure my earlier note to you and your family made it through, so I'm writing again. I am so very sorry for your loss. I remember visits we had -- you and Ken, Dave and I -- when you and I were teaching during a Caribbean cruise in 2011. That was a fun time. I know this is a difficult time. I can empathize.
