François was such a passionate of life, he taught me some things that I will never forget such as how to make Tie Dyes, how to correctly play "La Pétanque", what Grateful Dead was and useful american expressions. The hospitality with which you received me showed perfectly the kind of person that he was.My condolences to Loften, Christina and Zinho.

I sure will miss you today Francois. You and my dad had the same birthday. We celebrated many years together on this day before my dad left us in '92. You were the first person I befriended at H.P.H.S. I then met the rest of your family and have been a Deprez fan since 1984. You are very missed my friend. My heart goes out to Christina and the boys. I know all the other brothers are brought low by your passing as well. Rest in peace my brother.

I first met Francois in the summer of 2015. I traveled to Santa Clara with Michael Clark to see the Fare The Well shows. As we headed from the airport Michael begins telling me about this buddy of his that we will be hitting Shakedown Street with. After Michael’s introduction I was really looking forward to meeting this guy. And Francois didn’t disappoint. He was full of energy moving 90 miles and hour. He was pumped for those shows. He immediately treated me like a longtime friend. It was obvious from the getgo he has never met a stranger. I’ll never forget the great seen where he had his full collection of tie dye tee shirts hanging off the balcony of his hotel room so that any passerby who might be interested could buy a shirt before the where taken to sell on Shake Down. I bought one immediately and it’s the shirt I’m wearing on my Facebook home page since those shows. He also shared with me an awesome picture he took of the rainbow that appeared during the first day’s show. Just a great shot.
Last summer he hoisted me at his B & B and put me up in the state room (I’m embarrassed to say I forgot the official name of the room) which was fantastic. Even though I arrived late that night he took me all around the grounds showing me the barn, the loft, his dog Cocoa and we sat in the main sitting room until well after midnight as I last listening to his many adventures and diverse upbringing. Fascinating guy.
Going to concerts with him could be challenging because he taped every show and one had to be quiet sitting next to him or he would turn to you and give you the “shush eye”.
I saw two more shows with him last year and we had great times. Of course he burn for me CD recordings of both shows to keep.
I will forever in time think of him as I listen to one of those shows. You can bet I’ll be wearing his tie dye tee when I see Dead & Co this summer.

I only knew Francois for a few years. !978-1981 seems about right. He was wise beyond his years and I really admired his numerous positive qualities. He was smooth and charming with my parents. He knew how to sail and taught me the basic skills. He had a laid back attitude and was always thick skinned. He smoked English and French cigarettes. Sometimes, he smoked Marlboro Reds, but that just showed his flexibility. I really liked him. I thought he was a hell of a man.

My husband told me of Francois' death. I was so saddened to hear of your family's loss. Francois lovingly hosted my husband, stepsons and myself on more than one occasion. We had just spoken to him a few weeks ago about booking another trip this past week. He was an amazing and kind host and man. May he rest in peace, and I wish God's blessings on your entire family as you face this loss.

Hélène told me this (i can't find the word for "this") yesterday. I can't stop thinking about him and about you, about your family, about this place where i played petanque, and had this party in Bingham when i landed in RDU on sept 2015. I remember those conversations about sailing, about photos, about so much things he used to do, to make, to love. A man like François shouldn't have to leave this world so soon. It's not in the order of things...
I feel certainly more than my few american words could say... Je pense à vous tous.

Dear Friends & Family,
Another friend crossed over to The Other One. Recounting adventures with Francois, it’d feel like we were in a Jack Kerouac, Ken Kesey, Tom Robbins, and Tom Wolfe novel. With Francois, I met people from all walks of life, the upper echelons and happy ragtags from all over El Mundo. His wife, Christina, a steadying influence, and wonderful human being took an immediate liking to me and I to her. For the longest time I wanted to visit their B & B. More evidence to reconnect with friends on the regular.
He and I drove to Denver to see the Grateful Dead. Car broke. Entered just as show began that night. They played Jack Straw. Needed that for our travel travails. At Las Vegas ‘94, he hosted at a hotel suite to party and sleep in at swanky hotel for a two-night Dead show—or was it three? There was little sleep to be had.
First night, the show was weak. Thought it was time to put down instruments; stop trying to sing. Next nite they rocked the desert alive. Bruce Hornsby played piano. Stevie Winwood, the opening act, sat in with them. They played a sweet, rendition of Eyes of the World. If memory serves well, they did the first Help On The Way -> Slipknot -> Franklin’s Tower in a long spell.
Francois made the best tye-dies, ever. I remember one grey and white one. He got around street vending rules by making tie dyes out of cotton and fruit. He hooked us up with great bootleg tapes of favorite bands like the Dead and New Bohemians (known as The New Bos before they got signed and changed band name to Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians). Francois knew their soundman.
If you went to their wedding, you know it transpired in another dimension. The reception must’ve been the greatest joining up of wild earth types and truly wealthy people from North and South America. Timothy Leary’s widow attended. Throw in characters from a wonderfully strange island of misfit and unique toys. Furs, jewelry and purses were left at tables like theft was not possible. Either that or it didn’t matter. One of us lost something important. Don’t think it was me. Probably. I don’t remember. Still, such a joyous, magical wedding adventure. What a great start for a wonderful life of family AND friends!
Francois Xavier DePrez, my dear wild amazing friend, you will be most missed. What a long strange trip it’s been.
Revolutionary love and being,
Robert Muñoz, Jr., PhD
PS. Thank you for the most amazing grey + white tie dye of any color I ever wore. Somebody’s got pics: Jamie, Maggy, Carter?
PS. PS. Dang. Life. And Death. Sure hope to see you in another wonderful henceforth where we hang a whole lot more.

When I first met Francois over a quarter of a century ago at the time of Chrissi’s and his wedding, I was impressed by many things, amongst them: his kind and affable demeanor; his deep love for my dear friend; his passion for animals; his appreciation of the Grateful Dead; and last but not least, his diligent use of coasters. Fare you well, my friend, this Earth has lost a beautiful soul.

What a wonderful human being and friend. Thank you for being a friend and allowing me to hang out in the back house in DF. You and Christina were very gracious. I truly am sorry we couldn’t hang out more and laugh and go over more standard operating procedures for Valle de Bravo, Polanco, or anywhere you were in charge. You will be missed here on earth. May the Lord bless you and lift your family up on wings of eagles brother......

It's hard to accept that we will never again get a call from Francois saying he is in town and coming over- have a few beers, view more than a few photos of the latest happenings- Loften off to Yale, Christina's latest offerings at the farmer's markets, the latest roadside treasure he had found and stashed away in a barn, an ongoing project at the Inn and the like. He had so much love for and pride in his family. From the time way back when he made my husband's first Valentine's Day present from me (you can tie die a set of king sized sheets), Francois has been the kind of friend that always made the effort to stay in touch and keep connected. He was the kindest, most generous and loving soul. We love you and will miss you greatly. To his family, we send our love and deepest sympathies.
