MEBANE - Polly Rogers Roberts, 82, formerly of 303 South Fifth Street, Mebane, died Sunday, February 2, at the Hospice home with her family by her side. Born September 6, 1931, in Orange County, she was the wife of the late John R. (Jack) Roberts and the daughter of the late James Guy and Blanche Moore Rogers. She was a former floral designer and dental assistant. A devoted member of Mebane United Methodist Church, she served as a former Sunday school teacher and was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Golden Chain Circle. She was also a member of the Mebane Historical Society.
Polly loved her church, her family, and her community. Her greatest joy in life was cooking and sharing the food that she so lovingly prepared with family and friends. She was well known for her cooking talents and especially famous for her chicken salad. She also loved to "dig in the dirt" as she would say and she grew beautiful flowers to make floral arrangements for others to enjoy. She loved to entertain and she was so proud to show off her home and yard which she worked so hard to maintain. If the church door was open, she was usually there, and she spent countless hours in the church kitchen, especially preparing meals for Holy Week services. She is survived by her daughter, Susan King and husband Ricky, grandson, Clay Smith, granddaughter, Ashley Tart, and great-granddaughter. Skylar Grace White. She is also survived by a sister, Ann Coleman and husband H. G., sisters-in-law, Peggy Rogers and Kynochea Rogers, and many beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by sisters Martha Sartin and Lib Brigman and brothers Joe Rogers, James Rogers, Lawrence Rogers, and Vernon Rogers.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM on Wednesday, February 5 at Walker Funeral Home, 304 W. Center Street, Mebane, and at other times at the home of Susan and Ricky King, 113 N. Oakland Drive, Mebane. The funeral will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Thursday, February 6 at Mebane United Methodist Church by the Reverend Johnnie Wright. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mebane United Methodist Church, 200 South Fourth Street, Mebane, N.C. 27302, or Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, N.C. 27215.
