Dr. Louis L. Vine, 91, passed away April 3, 2014 in Myrtle Beach, SC. He was born May 19, 1922 to Bella and Paul Levine in Brooklyn, NY. At 16, he went to undergraduate at Cornell University (and played third base for the baseball team)Then on to Middlesex University Veterinary College, now part of Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass. Unable to decide among Vine and four other seniors, the dean resorted to a drawing of straws to determine whom he would be recommending for a veterinary position available in Chapel Hill, NC . Dr. Vine won the draw and soon was headed south
He practiced veterinary medicine in Chapel Hill for more that 40 years. He helped found the Animal Protection Society and cared, without charge, for all the stray cats and dogs brought to his hospital. His clients came from all over and felt he was a very dedicated doctor by caring for their pets with a love and skill that they will never forget. He had an innate feeling for the animals he treated and was a great diagnostician. His specialty was fixing the ears on the dogs that needed them to stand up straight. Macy's brought their guard dogs to him many years ago to repair and perfect their ears. There were the many books that he wrote quite a few of which have been published in other countries. He was also a frequent guest on radio and TV.
His love for animals was only superceded by his love for Carolina basketball . Always the sportsman, he had a lifetime passion for golf which he played until he was 91.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Florence and two daughters-Joan Vine of Chapel Hill and Sandy Vine of Myrtle Beach,a grandson, Jacob Denham of Durham and a sister, Hortense Deitch of New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his son, James Vine.
