Obituary of David Gregory Brooks

David Gregory "Greg" Brooks, born February 19, 1946, passed away at home on July 18, 2014, after a lengthy illness. He was a native of Siler City, NC, son of Margaret and Jack Brooks. Greg earned a BS degree in Pharmacy at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1970, then entered the U.S. Army and served until 1972. After entering the UNC School of Dentistry, he was awarded the Pfeiffer Fellow and graduated at the top of his class in 1976. He then completed a residency in Orthodontics, earning an MS, in 1978. From 1978-2003, Greg set up an orthodontic practice serving Dunn, NC and the surrounding area. He actively served in his community by providing free orthodontic care to children and families in need. Greg was also active in his church and served on the local hospital board. In addition to practicing orthodontics and serving his community, he enjoyed being an adjunct professor at the UNC School of Orthodontics. Dr. Brooks was awarded the College of Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics in 1989. Following the death of his son, Andrew McArthur Brooks in 1993, he set up the Andrew McArthur Brooks Fellowship providing scholarships to students in the UNC School of Orthodontics. He is survived by his wife, Martha Moffitt Brooks; daughter, Whitney Taylor Brooks; brother, Jack Brooks; nephew, Steve Brooks, wife, Donna, and daughters, Emily and Lauren; sister-in-law, Phyllis Moffitt Brawley, and husband, Tommy Brawley; niece, Sloan Brawley Barber, husband, Ed Barber, and daughter, Nora Jane Barber; and nephew, Scott Brawley.

Services will be held at Chapel of the Cross, 304 E. Franklin St., Chapel Hill, NC at 2PM July 20, 2014. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Andrew McArthur Brooks Fellowship or to UNC Hospice.
A reception will be held at Chapel Hill Bible Church located at 260 Erwin Road in Chapel Hill following the services.
