My dear sister-friend Elva, and godchildren, Kathryn and John. Words just can't express the gratitude I have in my heart for sharing all your lives, and the big sweet man that was your husband and Dad. I told him many times how lucky I thought you all were to have each other, and how lucky I felt to share great times, laughter and love with all of you. He was so proud of all of you, and I feel he is going to be God's best guardian angel continuing to watch over you. I loved our visits, times eating out, then crashing on the sofa at 8:30 trying to watch a movie. I loved 'porching' watching your Dad rock back and forth laughing at some story we were sharing about our youth or yours. He loved my spaghetti, and I think of him every time I make a pot. We will all carry him with us throughout the rest of our lives, and he lives on in the beautiful legacy he built with you guys. Tomorrow we will celebrate him!
Ms. Ann, Dee Dee and Frannie..all of you are in my thoughts and prayers also. I feel honored that I could be with you, and your grace under the circumstances was amazing! He was very proud to be your son Ann. He always shared your pictures in the paper, and talked of how he respected and loved you. And same with you little sisters. Again, we will celebrate the beautiful man he was! Peace and love, Debbie Horne

To Elva Small and family:
Upon returning to work after Thanksgiving, I was most shocked to read of the death of your long-time love. I worked for maybe nine months out of the Durham Op Center before being moved east. Steve's smile and gentle manner was a pleasure to behold each day at work - even when he was tired, he was encouraging. At this time, It is oh so difficult to honor the counsel of 1 Thessalonians 5:18, "In all things give thanks..." But thank God for the time Steve spent with you, and live the remainder of your life with the plan and expectation of seeing him again. Come Lord Jesus.
Walk with God,
Nathan Pinnix

Elva, Kathryn and John your husband/Dad was a special person. I would often sit beside him during staff meetings and he never failed to tell me about his two children and how proud he was of them. His face would light up with that big smile that we knew so well, and he would tell me what you were doing. Even though I did not know you personally, your Dad was your biggest fan. Elva, he would tell me about you and how he was looking forward to the next cruise. Steve was a special friend and I will miss him greatly. May your mind be filled with precious memories of Steve and your heart be filled with the love, strength and peace of Jesus Christ during this difficult time.
