We are so very sorry to hear Mr. Couch has passed away. He was CO owner of Couch Oil Company and Gulf in Hillsborough with Philip D. Childers until Mr. Childers retired. Condolences to the family.

I was saddened this morning to hear of John's passing earlier this week. My husband Mick Halpin and I met John in 2004 when we were living in Hillsborough, and we valued the many conversations we shared, gaining much strength by discussing our common experiences. Even after we moved to Burlington, we always appreciated the opportunities we had to see John again. Unfortunately, both John's and Mick's declining health over the past couple years ended those visits, but we thought of John often. I extend my deepest condolences to his family and friends, and I believe with all my heart that John was warmly welcomed into heaven by my husband who passed away just two months ago. I am sure they are enjoying long and great debates in meetings with all our other friends who have gone ahead of us, and are saving seats for us when it is our turns to join them. Until then, we carry them in our hearts and memories. Carolyn Rea

Mr. Couch was such an inspiration to so many people...especially the incarcerated...He facilitated the AA Program for over 25 years at the prison and so many lives were changed due to his guidance and support. I worked closely with Mr. Couch and found him not only bringing the message of hope and recovery but also he was one of the most loved and respected men I know, and what made him so successful is he was genuine and loved and cared about people and their futures. ..His prison ministry also included taking the guys to church, and leading many of them to Christ. Just wanted to let you know how much we loved him, and what a wonderful devoted person he was....

I appreciated the friendship with John Couch over the past 20 years I have known him. He was always ready to talk and things out when someone needed help. He reached out to many people over the years and shared from his own experience, strength and hope. He will be missed by those closest to him.

What a sweet man John was. Several years ago he came to Bethel Christian Center searching for a church that would welcome him and his prison ministry. Many can say today that they are better because the knew and lived John Couch. It was a pleasure and honor to know John. See you on the other side. Tammy Smith Bethel Christian Center
