I have just learned of Jimmy's passing. He was a senior at Jordan High School when I was a sophomore, and had just moved to Durham when my dad was appointed to serve Epworth United Methodist Church. He was always so very kind and helpful to me. His infectious smile would light up a room!!! He was most definitely a role model for us sophomores and juniors, as well as his own classmates. His was a shining bright light at Jordan High School and always put his "best foot forward." When I think of Jimmy "The Legend of the Butterfly" by Walter Dudley Cavert comes to mind......
"In the bottom of an old pond lived some grubs who could not understand why none of their group ever came back after crawling up the lily stems to the top of the water. They promised each other that the next one who was called to make the upward climb would return and tell what had happened to him. Soon one of them felt an urgent impulse to seek the surface; he rested himself on the top of a lily pad and went through a glorious transformation which made him a dragonfly with beautiful wings. In vain he tried to keep his promise. Flying back and forth over the pond, he peered down at his friends below. Then he realized that even if they could see him they would not recognize such a radiant creature as one of their number.
The fact that we cannot see our friends and family and family, or communicate with them after the transformation which we call death..... is no proof that they cease to exist."
My the peace, presence, and victory of our Lord sustain you during this difficult time. Blessings.....Robin Sabiston Creech

I am so sorry to hear of Jimmy's passing. I have many fond memories of him, but remember him coming to our family ChrIstmas party when we were juniors. He gave me a necklace that still brings a smile to my face when I see it. He was on my husband's football team(class of '77). Please know your family is in my prayers. Debbie Nelson McKnight

Very sorry for the way-too-soon loss of Jimmy.
He was a kind man and gentle giant if there ever was one.
Two years his junior, two-thirds his size and one-tenth as strong I recall being pushed around and even leveled by him many times during high school football practices.
Funny, he was invariably apologetic about it and quick to offer a hand-up.
It's who he was.
Sincere sympathies to the Simpson Family and Jimmy's friends.
