Obituary of Nancy Elizabeth Ehle

Please share a memory of Nancy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Nancy Elizabeth Ehle of Chapel Hill, N.C., passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 18, 2016. Born in Asheville, N. C., Nancy was the youngest of five siblings born to John Marsden Ehle and Gladys Starnes Ehle. Nancy was raised in Asheville and graduated from Lee Edwards High School in 1963. She attended Meredith College and transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she received both her undergraduate degree and her Master's degree in Education. She was passionate about education and had a fulfilling career teaching elementary education within the public school system of Chapel Hill. She furthered her professional experience with teaching positions in the Netherlands and at the Little Red School House in Greenwich Village in New York City. In 1985 she married the love of her life, Warren A. Nord, Ph.D., and together they raised a son, Jeremy Nord, in Chapel Hill. Nancy's greatest joys were her marriage to her husband and raising her son. She was proud of Warren's achievements as the founder and Director of the UNC Program in the Humanities and Human Values, which he led for 25 years. And she was equally proud of Jeremy, who was deeply caring of her and attentive to her. He was the light of her life. Nancy retired from teaching in 1995 after suffering serious injuries in an automobile accident. Despite her injuries, she and her husband remained active in the Chapel Hill community - raising their son, supporting the local arts community, and being active members of Binkley Baptist Church. Since 2010 she has resided at Atria Senior Living in Durham, N. C. Those close to Nancy know well that she was a joyful, positive person and always appreciative. Throughout Nancy's life she was a champion for educating youth, righting injustices to society, and serving as an inspiration to her family, including her many nieces and nephews. Nancy is survived by her son, Jeremy Nord, of Wilmington, N. C.; two brothers, John Marsden Ehle (Rosemary) of Winston-Salem and David Ehle (Linda Westerfield) of Charlotte; her sister-in-law, Peg (Bob) Ehle; and numerous nieces and nephews. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Warren, in 2010; her sister, Mary Anne Ehle Turner (John), in 1999; and her brother, Robert "Bob" Ehle (Peg), in 2015. The family would like to extend sincere appreciation to the staff at Atria Senior Living, to the medical and nursing staff who cared for Nancy, and to her personal attendant, Jackie Pointer, for the care and support that they showed Nancy in the final years of her life. A celebration of Nancy's life will take place at Binkley Baptist Church in Chapel Hill, N. C, on Tuesday, January 26, at 2:30pm. Visitation with family and friends will follow the service. Walker Funeral Home is serving the family. Memorials may be directed to the UNC Program in the Humanities, CB #3425, Chapel Hill NC 27599-3425; or to Binkley Baptist Church, 1712 Willow Drive, Chapel Hill NC 27514.
