Obituary of Joffre Lanning Coe

Joffre Lanning "Jay" Coe III, 36, of Hillsborough, passed away on January 30 at UNC Hospitals as the result of complications following a stroke. Born January 27, 1980, in Durham, N.C., Jay held an associate degree from Alamance Community College. He was a partner in J. Coe Antiques. His interests were far-ranging and included sports, art, reading, gaming, and costume design. He will be remembered best for his love of family, especially his son, as well as for his intelligence and his keen sense of humor. Jay maintained a number of close friendships over time and distance, based on his loyalty and unselfish concern for others. Jay was predeceased by his maternal grandparents Talmage and Louise Roper Chapman and his paternal grandparents Dr. Joffre Lanning Coe and Sally Denton Coe. He is survived by his parents, Joffre Lanning Coe II of Chapel Hill and Joline Chapman Coe of Hillsborough; a son, Joffre Lanning "Jake" Coe IV of the home, and his girlfriend, Julie Hertzberg Owen, of Lake Toxaway, N.C. A funeral service will be held Thursday, February 4, at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Walker Funeral Home. 120 W. Franklin St.,Chapel Hill, followed by interment at the Coe family plot in the Chapel Hill Cemetery on Legion Road. The Reverends Donnie Evans-Jones and Maxecine Mitchell will officiate, and Jake Coe, Tony Dalton, Dave Corey, Robert Porreca,.Christian Kammerman, and Damon Coe II will serve as pall bearers. A college fund is being set up for Jake Coe in memory of Jay as a legacy to his son, and those wishing to contribute may send donations to Joline Coe, 5300 Orange Grove Rd., Hillsborough, NC 27278.
