It was sad to hear of Bill's unexpected passing. I enjoyed meeting and talking with Bill, Elouise, and family at Ellingwood Reunions in Oxford County, Maine. He spoke to our group about his family history line, and contributed to our historical records. He and Elouise shared of their missionary work in the northwestern islands of Alaska. My thoughts and prayers are with Elouise, the family, and close friends for their loss!

Bill had a way of making everyone feel special-from the very moment you met him. He was an amazing friend to Phillip and me over the years. He had the biggest heart and cared deeply for others. He was always there for us-through the bad times and good and made the hardest times of my life easier. We will always cherish those memories. Elouise-please know that our thoughts are with you and your family. We hope it eases your pain to know that Bill was loved and respected by so many people.

We are praying for you and your family, Eloise. Dee and I did not get to know Bill personally, but we see many of his contributions in the woodwork at the Savoonga S.D.A. Church. The beautiful pulpit, communion table and candle holders. Bill's works do follow him. He is genuinely loved by the people in Savoonga, Alaska. Nearly every home we visit in the village speak fondly of Bill His memory will live on and be treasured up here. Eloise, may you find strength in Jesus at this difficult time.

I met Bill years ago while working in dialysis at Durham (East) Dialysis clinic. He was an exceptionally good and caring nurse- to both the dialysis patients and the teammates. I have said many times over the years that if there was ever an emergency in the clinic, Bill Hawkes was the nurse you would want there- he was always level headed and handled any and all emergency situations better than anyone I ever knew. I also recall that he never would use inclement weather as an excuse to miss work or dialysis- he would go out and pick up both staff and patients alike- always putting the health and wellbeing of others ahead of his own. Lastly, though we parted from that job long ago- he always made the effort to stay in touch, reach out and offer a hug, phone call, hello.... he was the glue that has kept many of us in touch those many years ago. He would often speak of Eloise (he was so proud of you being a nurse at the VA) and loved to share about his son, daughter and grands. He loved his family- it was evident and powerful- through the good and the rough times, Bill was always there to help and support in any and all ways he could.
I love they you were missionaries in Alaska- that was very heartwarming as I love missions and have just been on a few trips- always amazed me that you all were there for such a long time. How to show love for others- Bill did that in a powerful way. It seemed to come easy to him. I will always have the warmest and fondest memories of Bill- will not be able to look at a grapefruit or an orange without him coming to mind (he sold them for years I believe as a fundraiser- and we purchased them for most of those years!). Thank you for sharing the stories and memories on this page- have enjoyed reading through how he has touched others' lives as well as my own. Prayers are with you all at this time.

I remember Uncle Bill as a kind and fun loving Christ follower. Although we didn't live near each other, I recall spending many holidays, summer vacations and family reunions around with him and Aunt Eloise.
We really appreciated his help when my family's home burnt to the ground in 1995 and he loaned us his camper to live in until we got a new home. I'm sure he did lots more than as a kid I was unaware of.
I'm glad that he and Aunt Eloise were able to visit me in Texas and meet my children in the past few years. I'm so proud of their mission work in Alaska.
God used Uncle Bill to touch the lives of so many people, and is sorely missed. I look forward to a big bear hug from him when we meet again in Heaven.

Eloise and family, I am so saddened to hear about Bill. I worked with him in dialysis at Durham Regional and considered him a wonderful nurse and a great friend. Even after he stopped working, he would drop by occasionally to see me at the dialysis unit and I enjoyed his visits so much. I pray that God will hold you in His loving arms during this difficult time and that the wonderful memories you have of Bill will bring you comfort in the coming days.
Sincerely,
Kathy Fox

Eloise, I am so sorry to hear about Bill's untimely death. As you know, he and I served together in Vietnam, and became good friends. When we needed an anesthetist, Bill volunteered to learn. We taught him to intubate and monitor patients, and to administer anesthesia. Eventually, he was totally in charge of giving anesthesia. One of my greatest satisfactions from my time in Vietnam was helping to inspire Bill to become a certified nurse anesthetist (CRNA) when he returned to the US. His passion to be of service to others continued after he retired, as you and he developed a suicide prevention program for Native Americans in Alaska. We have all lost an inspirational friend. He will be missed.

We were sorry to hear of Mr. Hawkes' passing. May the love, kindness, compassion and generosity that he showed to others return to all of you. Hold fast to the precious memories of the special times that you shared and the wisdom and guidance he provided. In the days, weeks and months ahead, may you take comfort in His promise that "as thy days, so shall thy strength be" (Deuteronomy 33:25). Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

This is a very sad time for me and my husband. Bill was truly a father to me. I will always and forever remember how he touched my heart. Bill walked me down the isle on my wedding day,March 22 1998. When I asked him to do that on my special day,he didn't hesitate to say yes. He asked me before we began our walk down the isle was I okay and that took away the nerves. He made me proud that I had chosen the right man and forever had gained a dad. He continued to show me throughout the many years after that I was part of his family. My husband ,Ernest and I shared a beautiful vacation with him and our new family in Myrtle Beach. May you rest in heavenly peace, dad,I will miss you. God bless you my Hawked family, I'm very sorry for our loss.
