Obituary of Thelma Williams Shain

**Please note, the service was moved from the graveside at Judea Reform Congregation Cemetery to the chapel of Walker's Funeral Home due to the threat of severe weather on Wednesday.** Thelma Shain of Chapel Hill, NC died February 21, 2016 at age 87. Born in Abbeville, SC, she was the daughter of the late Pearl Scott Williams and Paul Grier Williams. Thelma married the love of her life, the late Arthur Shain. They resided for 30 years in Lumberton, NC and were proprietors of Shain's Jewelers before retiring to Chapel Hill in 1984. Thelma was actively involved in the community as a Brownie and Cub Scout Leader, member of the PTA, Temple Beth El sisterhood, and garden club. She was an avid bridge player, an accomplished cook, seamstress, and gardener who thoroughly enjoyed the company of family and friends. Thelma's family and friends admired her kind loving spirit and playful humor. Thelma is survived by her two beloved children, Joy Shain of Eugene, OR and Michael Shain and wife Hélène of Chapel Hill, NC; five grandchildren: Dylan and Anya Callahan, Arthur, Elliot, and Rose Shain; her brother Paul Williams, Jr.; sisters Joan Davis and Alice Knox; and her nieces and nephews, as well as their children and grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at 2PM on February 24, 2016 at Walker Funeral Home in Chapel Hill.
