Mary Elizabeth Pope Jones of Hillsborough, formerly of Cedar Grove and Hester's Store Community died Monday, February 22, 2016. Mary Elizabeth was born July 1, 1917 to Roy and Cora Pope of Cedar Grove. She was married to Curtis Jones (pre-deceased) of Hurdle Mills. She is survived by one daughter, Judy Jones Butler, 2 granddaughters Kristin (David) Shaw of Efland and Jenny Butler of Hillsborough, one great-granddaughter, Peyton Shaw of Efland and son-in-law Robbie Butler of Pittsboro. She had 4 brothers and sisters and is survived by her sister, Maria "Dude" Burton and sister-in-law, Bessie Pope. She was pre-deceased by Minnie Thomas (Ralph) Nelson, Henry Roberts Pope, Annie Mae (Horace) Hester and brother-in-law Robert Burton. She is also survived by brother and sisters-in-law Robert and Joyce Jones and Barbara Jones, all of Roxboro and many nieces and nephews. Family was very important to Mary Elizabeth as anyone knowing her knew. Her parents each had 8 brothers and sisters so she spent her life surrounded by aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Mary Elizabeth graduated from Aycock High School in Cedar Grove where she was a member of the girls' basketball team. She worked at Fairchild in Burlington and retired from Thalhimers in Durham in 1980. She was a member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church and attended regularly as long as she was able. Mary Elizabeth lived in Cedar Grove most of her life but moved to Hurdle Mills in the mid-80s where she and her sister, Annie Mae lived and roamed together for 25 years. Mary Elizabeth was an avid quilter and enjoyed years of quilting, talking and sharing food with the Cedar Grove Quilters. Mary Elizabeth spent her last few years at Villines Rest Home in Hillsborough where she was not only cared for but loved too. The family appreciates that the staff cared so much for "Miss Mary". Visitation will be at Walkers Funeral Home in Hillsborough on Thursday night from 6:00-8:00 and a memorial service will be held on Friday at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church at 2:00PM. Mary Elizabeth loved flowers so flowers are appropriate but donations to Villines Rest Home at 401 West Queen Street in Hillsborough are also appreciated.
