MEBANE, NC - Mildred Lucille Albert Mills of Mebane, NC died at home on July 30, 2013. She was born June 30, 1916 in McCoy, VA. Mildred was predeceased by her husband Alfred Leland Mills (Mebane) in 1984 after 38 years of marriage, her parents Essie Honora Kerr Albert and John Edward Albert (Blacksburg, VA), her sister Vivian Albert Broyles (Roanoke, VA), and brother Ralph C. Albert (Salem, VA) and Ray A. Albert (Blacksburg), and their spouses that included her dearest friend, sister-in-law Annie Mae Albert (Blacksburg). She is survived by: son David Leland Mills, daughter-in-law Susan Wood Mills, and granddaughter Anna Elizabeth Mills of Coventry, CT, son Stephen Albert Mills of Mebane and grandchildren John Thomas Mills (Mebane), Isaac Scot Mills (Chadron, NE) and great grand daughters Emily and Aliyah, Dwight Lane Mills (Alamagordo, NM) and great grandson Evan, and Shannon Marie Casey (Pocahontas, VA) and great granddaughter Destiny. Mildred resided in Blacksburg for 27 years and was a graduate of Blacksburg High School 1934 and Virginia Polytechnic Institute 1938, with a bachelor's degree in education. She worked for a decade in research at the university and later after raising a young family was a substitute teacher in the Roanoke County public schools. She resided in the locations of Norfolk, Pulaski, Radford and Roanoke, Virginia before settling in Mebane. She was an active member of the Blacksburg Christian Church, the Westhampton Christian Church (Roanoke), and the Mebane Presbyterian Church. She actively supported her sons, participating as a scout leader and a high school band supporter. After locating with her husband to Mebane, NC, in 1975, Mildred was a volunteer at the Presbyterian Home of Hawfields for many years. She also participated in volunteer work with Meals on Wheels and Red Cross blood drives. At the age of 60 she discovered an artistic ability and for a decade produced oil paintings, creating a large collection for extended family. For her entire life she was an avid supporter of and enjoyed Virginia Tech sports and participating in Virginia Tech alumni activities. She has been the surviving Albert family elder for several years and has maintained close relationships with her nieces and their families. In lieu of flowers the family suggests commemorative donations to the Mebane Presbyterian Church or to Hospice and Palliative Services of Alamance and Caswell Counties. Visitation and a funeral service will be held at the Mebane Presbyterian Church Friday August 2, 2013. Visitation from 3 to 4:30 pm. The funeral service will be at 7 p.m. There will be a brief graveside service at 3 p.m. Saturday August 3 at Westview Cemetery located on Roanoke Street in Blacksburg, VA. Walker's Funeral Home of Mebane will be handling arrangements.
