I met Ms. Eldred long before she taught my children in high school via a mutual friend. I looked forward to my children having her as a teacher. When my family went through a devastating situation, Gwen was one of the few who saw things as they were. She provided a tremendous amount of support and contributed words that resulted in one of the greatest gifts of my life. She was a woman of amazing dignity, beauty, strength, and heart. She brought a lot of good into the world and it is a dimmer place without her.

It is with great sadness that we try to express what Gwen meant to the Burke family.
We will miss the STM sporting events, 5:15 Saturday Mass, the K of C pancake breakfasts, and DPAC season tickets that Gwen shared with us but this current pain cannot erase the many wonderful memories.
Gwen taught all 3 of our children and helped instill in them her deep and rich life values. Not one just to confine her interest to teaching only, she followed the Burke kids through high school at Cardinal Gibbons attending all three graduations and then further following their lives through 2 weddings.
Her commitment to her students was remarkable and much deeper than just the commonly cited 30 year teaching tenure. We remember her efforts in working with STM parents to establish a middle school when the idea was not being warmly embraced by the Pastor at that time. After the eventual agreement to establish the STM Middle School, Gwen then was a pivotal force in the startup and taught there until her passing. Gwen's impact on the lives of hundreds of students that she taught and thousands that she interacted with will live on for generations.
Our thoughts are with Charlie, Joe, Jeanne, and Ed, and Gwen's grandchildren, Scott, Wendy, Sophie, JJ, and Noah as they go through this difficult time but it should be recognized that they are the living proof of the value of a life well spent.

Today I was very saddened to hear of Gwen's passing. Gwen was a dear friend at Our Lady of the Lake Unversity, and we shared classes and many laughs. We lived near one another in New Orleans when we were both first married and Charlie and Joe were born. We had also lived in Chapel Hill. I will miss her laugh and her smile. Gwen was a wonderful and loving person.

Gwen and I became acquainted during similar trials in our lives. Her graceful acceptance, good humor and generous spirit gave me a model and helped me find my footing. She was a wonderful mother, teacher and woman and my condolences go to her children, grandchildren, and students. When I think of the women who early Easter morning went to the tomb, I will always picture Gwen Eldred among them, seeing, but not surprised by the angel and hearing the good news.

I was fortunate to know her as "Gwen" though of course my three sons knew her as Ms. Eldred. They were "all" her kids. She was able to relate as a parent and a teacher to the families. She could not have been more devoted the the students of STM. I don't think she missed many games, dances, productions, or any teacher- student games during Catholic Schools week. She was such a rock at STM school and saw it through many changes. We (The Meyer family and STM family) were so blessed that we were able to share time with her here in our community. She will be missed.
Our sincerest condolences to her children who she loved so much and was so very proud of.

Gwen was so good at identifying what made each student "tick" and was able to provide the means for them to reach their potential. Our family was truly blessed to have had Gwen as an 8th teacher, a wonderful role model and an amazing example of a person leading a Christ-like life. We will miss her dearly and can only find comfort in the wonderful memories we have of her from our classroom experiences, her relentless support of the various athletic teams and her involvement in each and every 8th grade graduation over the past 30 years.
Much Love to Her Family,
Sue Walsh, Sarah (Pitts), Shelby (Baldwin) and Shawn Stankavage
