Most of us have a kind of "short list" of those people who have had the greatest influence on our lives. For us academics, this list usually includes one's dissertation adviser, along with perhaps one or two other mentors and models in our field who have memorably inspired and encouraged us. If we are especially blessed, such a mentor and model also becomes a cherished friend. Decades ago, when I was barely out of graduate school, John Headley took on all these roles for me, and I know he did so for many other young historians as well. John epitomized that rarest of breeds: the highly accomplished and distinguished scholar who is infinitely generous with his time, knowledge, and support - a patron in the fullest and best sense. Along with all his colleagues, close friends, and family, I feel not only the inevitable deep sense of loss at his passing, but also the warmest possible gratitude for the many gifts he shared with us. They were gifts of both mind and heart. And yes, gifts of spirit. Together with you, I thank the spirit of all creation for the life of John Headley.

I am very sorry to hear this. John had a special ability to bring people together from far and wide for memorable social evenings. He was "old school" in the best sense. He will be much missed among the medieval-renaissance community here at ECU.
I and my family also had the great fortune to visit him and Gerda in their little white house in Vermont, where they were living an enviably peaceful and creative life together in the countryside. His (their) hospitality was extraordinary.

John was the close and esteemed colleague of my late husband, Ronald Witt, and a dear friend to both of us. Discussions with him were always stimulating and thought-provoking. His interests were wide-ranging. He was also a kind and caring person and a true gentleman. Even in failing health, he continued the convivial cocktail parties that brought together Renaissance scholars and their spouses from the triangle and beyond. I send you my heartfelt condolences. I will miss him.

John Headley was my mentor, collaborator, and above all dear and trusted friend for the last 38 years. In the 1980s, we were often told we resembled each other and once I felt deeply honored when, at a scholarly meeting, someone greeted me as "John ... although your appearance has changed somehow." He would always spend some days in Boston on his way to Vermont in the summer, and we were delighted to offer him hospitality. He reciprocated by hosting us at Boston's finest restaurants ... or, on my visits to the Triangle, at the best that Chapel Hill or Durham could provide. His skills as a scholar were rivalled by his skills as a host and a gourmet. Whether you discussed history or menus with him, you would learn much in the experience.
Without his encouragement and insistence, I would not have undertaken certain scholarly projects. He helped me find my voice and my message.
His wit was keen but always courteous. His skill in criticism became a form of humane generosity. He was, as I came to learn from private conversations, enormously generous to those in need. His vision of the better side of our European legacy, one of reason, of comity, and of human rights can still inspire us. He was indeed as humane, and even perhaps as courtly, as the humanists he studied.
I grieve the loss of this exceptional scholar, close friend, and gentleman.

I am so very sorry for your loss and extend my heartfelt sympathy to you. John was a gracious and generous gentleman, unfailingly kind and thoughtful, and a superb model and mentor to so many of us of the very best in scholarship, collegiality, and friendship. We will miss him terribly at Carolina, especially those of us in the Medieval and Early Modern studies community. But I also reflect on, admire, and celebrate a full life, well led. What a wonderful and enduring legacy! In sympathy, Marsha S. Collins

Please accept my condolences on John's passing. He was a great scholar and a good friend who lent me his support and welcomed me to his home on many occasions over many years. I have known no one else who managed to combine genuine respect and human warmth so elegantly with expressions of scholarly criticism that were as precise as they were witty. I treasure his memory.

This morning I receive an email with news of Dr. Headley's passing. I was his student during the late '90s. Afterward (during?), we became friends. I admired his mental acuity, could pick his gravelly erudite voice out of any crowd, and delighted in seeing his perpetual bowties around campus.
His approval of my future husband involved a nerve racking turned jolly dinner at A Southern Season. And receiving his publications after retirement only reminded me further of, truly, one of the best instructors I've ever had.
For the last several years, I have tried to contact him, and was so grateful when my parents saw him a few months ago and we were able to speak by phone.
My one regret? And likely his? I did not choose a career in academe.
I was immensely fond of him; he stretched my mental resources and writing skills unlike any other professor, and continuously challenged me to strive for excellence after graduation. I will miss him terribly, and seek to honor him by instilling a love of history in my own children.
In deepest sympathy with his family, colleagues and friends,
Susannah Smoot Campbell, UNC-CH '97
