Obituary of Dennis Horace Howell

Please share a memory of Dennis to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dennis Horace Howell, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother in law, uncle and dear friend went to be with the Lord early Sunday morning April 17, 2016 after a long valiant battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Dennis was born on January 29, 1939 in Roanoke, VA to the late Horace Charles Howell and Sarah Graybill Howell. He grew up in Troutville, VA and answered the call to attend the University of NC at Chapel Hill where he played football, joined the Sigma Nu fraternity and worked at The Hub on Franklin Street. He remained a die hard Tar Heel and sharp dresser for his entire life! Dennis married his childhood sweetheart, Lynda Anne Puckett, and the two enjoyed 54 years of marriage. He had a long, thriving career as a real estate developer and cared deeply about the town of Chapel Hill and served on numerous boards and committees. His love for golf and deep sea fishing were his favorite ways to experience the beauty of the blue ridge mountains and the crystal coast of NC. He mostly enjoyed cheering on his grand children from the sidelines of their games. University Baptist Church and Sunrise Church played a significant role in Dennis' spiritual life. He also treasured the meaningful fellowship and teaching of the Chapel Hill Men's Bible Study Group. Dennis is survived by his wife, Lynda Howell; his daughter, Angela Howell Owens and son in law, Greg Owens of Chapel Hill, NC; his son, Drew Howell and daughter in law Liza Kenan Howell of Park City, UT. He is also survived by his 7 grandchildren, Greylyn, Colby and Emma Owens and Lily, Beth, Kate and Andy Howell. The family will receive friends and family at Walker's Funeral Home for visitation from 6 pm until 8 pm Tuesday, April 19th, 2016. A memorial service will be held at University Baptist Church at 2 pm on Wednesday April 20th, 2016. The family is grateful for his team of excellent caregivers; Portia Hedgepeth, Jerome Richardson, Jaquelin Hinson, Robert Quick, Ronald "Bay Bay" Davis, James Leak, Randy Ellis and La'Toya Tailor-Williams. Those wishing to honor and celebrate the life of Dennis Howell are encouraged to make donations to www.CurePSP.org or Durham Rescue Mission. www.walkersfuneralservice.com
