Obituary of William C Ragland

William Crutcher Ragland, age 87, died on April 27, 2016. He was born on May 25, 1928 in
Taylorsville, KY to the late Samuel Emerson Ragland and Lillian Harlow Ragland. Bill went to
College High School, led by the Teacher's College and now part of Western Kentucky University
in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He was a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army and was a
World War II and Korean War veteran.
Bill went to the University of Kentucky on the GI bill and graduated with a BS in Commerce. He
later attended graduate school at the University of Michigan. He worked as a CPA for the
Internal Revenue Service and spent the early part of his career investigating cases overseas.
He met his first wife Maria Norma Castro Ragland in the Philippines where they worked on the
same case. After getting married they moved back to Northern Virginia and he finished up his
career working for the Treasury Department in Washington, DC and later for Fairfax County,
Virginia. Bill and Norma had three children: Marie Yvonne Ragland Werbel (married to Fred
Werbel), D Michele Ragland Dilworth (married to Ed Dilworth III) and Eric William Ragland
(deceased). Norma preceded him in death after 33 years of marriage. Bill has five
grandchildren: Hannah Elizabeth Werbel, Eric Norman Werbel, Patrick Castro Dilworth, Edmond
John Dilworth IV, and Lucas Ragland Dilworth.
Bill and Catherine Crowe Dickman were married in 2000. He relocated to North Carolina where
she lived and worked. For the past ten years they have lived in Galloway Ridge Retirement
Center in Pittsboro, NC.
Bill was a generous person and shared his gifts with others, including a meaningful endowment
to Western Kentucky University for a speaker series on business and ethics. He was a member
of Christ United Methodist Church in Pittsboro.
In addition to his parents, first wife and son, Bill was preceded in death by his brother Charles E.
Ragland and his sister Lillian Ragland Caudill.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
A memorial service is scheduled at Galloway Ridge for 3 PM on Saturday, April 30.
