Obituary of Faye Smith Patterson

Faye Smith Patterson, 92, of Hillsborough, died Monday, May 2, 2016.
Born on August 1, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Omer Roy Smith and Mary Fields Smith. Faye graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1940; and after graduating from Croft's Business School in Durham, she moved to Richmond, Virginia, to pursue a career. She returned home in January 1944 and married Ernest (Pat) Patterson whom she met in high school while he was a teacher there.
Her first local employment was as a dispatcher at McLean Trucking Company in Durham before becoming Assistant Register of Deeds in Orange County. In September 1961, she became the office teller at Duke Power Company until her retirement in July 1985.
Faye and Pat were very active members of the Hillsborough Presbyterian Church for decades and she was a faithful leader in her Circle and the Women of the Church. Later she thoroughly enjoyed church volunteer work trips to Western NC where she was usually the oldest participant. In 2007, she was recognized as an Outstanding Older Adult by the Presbytery of New Hope. Also, she was active in the Duke Energy retirees, NARFE, Meals-On-Wheels delivery program, as well as the Schley American Legion Auxiliary. She was recognized as Retiree Volunteer of the Year by the Duke Energy Triangle Retiree Chapter July 26, 2007.
The family thanks the dedicated, loving staff of Villines Rest Home and especially Louise Murphy for her special care of Faye during the past three years. The family would also like to thank UNC Hospice for their gracious assistance and support.
Faye was predeceased by her husband, Ernest Edward Patterson, after 55 years of marriage. She is survived by two children: Janis Patterson Wade and husband, Tommy, of Durham, and son, Hal Edward Patterson and wife, Frances, of Chapel Hill; two grandchildren: Russell Wade and wife, Marina, of Huntersville NC, and Amy Wade Brewer and husband, Jeff, of Raleigh; and three great-grandchildren: Lalan Brewer, CJ Wade and Parker Wade.
Funeral services will be held Thursday May 5 at 11 a.m. at the Hillsborough Presbyterian Church followed by burial in the Hillsborough Town Cemetery. There will be a visitation at Walkers Funeral Home in Hillsborough on Wednesday evening May 4 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
