Obituary of Marguerite Pegram Hutchins

Marguerite Pegram Hutchins, age 95, passed away peacefully on May 27th, 2016 surrounded by her family. Mrs. Hutchins was born on August 24, 1920, in Winston Salem, NC. Her parents, William and Stella Pegram, preceded her in death. She is survived by three children; Jill Horan and husband Dick, Alex Hutchins and wife Donna, and Glenn Hutchins and wife Debbie and eight grandchildren; Ned Frisbee and wife Tracy, Joanna Hutchins, James Hutchins and fiancé, Liz Lechner, Phillip Hutchins, Rick Horan and wife Kelli, and Bobby Horan and wife Heather, Brad Call and Jocelyn Handy, her honorary grandchild. She is also survived by seven great-grandkids; Elizabeth "Marguerite" Frisbee, Thomas "Hutchins" Frisbee, Ethan "Davis" Frisbee, Kasey Horan, Sarah Horan, Laura Horan, and Kallon Horan. The family would also like to thank two very special long time aides, Katrice Perry and Malika Hamilton. Marguerite traveled extensively throughout the world accompanying her beloved husband James Alexander Hutchins, Jr., who passed in 2002, and made a home for her family in Alexandria, VA, Egypt, Greece, Poland and Holland. The stories of her adventures and navigation of these countries, including her escape from Cairo, Egypt during the 7 Day War in 1967 with her youngest son, Glenn, in tow are things of legend. Finally, in 1980 Marguerite and Jim retired to the place they always called home, Chapel Hill, NC. To her there wasn't a better place to live. Marguerite's passion was learning and sharing this passion with not only her family, but her countless friends around the world. She continued this passion throughout her entire life, through travel, lectures and tours. As her children and grandchildren can attest to, there wasn't a museum or cultural location that was ever missed or not sought out. Marguerite and Jim enjoyed spending time at their home in Kitty Hawk during the early summer, which included their annual visit to the Wright Brothers Memorial and Lost Colony, to which they were also involved in their preservations. She was also heavily involved locally with her church, the University United Methodist Church of Chapel Hill, The Chapel Hill Cemetery Commission, The Wesley Campus Ministries, the Chapel Hill Public Library and Playmakers Theater in Chapel Hill. She also volunteered extensively at The Cedars in Chapel Hill where she was a Charter Member. Her legacy of learning and the promotion thereof will continue to be felt through the lecture series bearing her name at The Center for the Study of the American South, located at The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. A funeral service for Marguerite will be held, Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at 1:00 p.m. at Walker's Funeral Home of Chapel Hill, 120 W. Franklin St., interment will take place in the family plot at Old Chapel Hill Cemetery. A reception in her honor will be held immediately after the ceremony at the home of her daughter and son- in- law, 86502 Holmes, Chapel Hill, NC 27517.
