Obituary of Martin Joel Rubin

Martin Joel Rubin, age 96, died on July 22, 2016, at his home in Fearrington Village, North Carolina. Martin was born on November 30, 1919, in New York City to the late Harry and Ella Rubin and was married for 65 joyous years to Helene. In addition to his wife Helene, he is survived by his son Harry and wife Cathy of New York City, daughter Carol of Los Angeles, son John and wife Jane of Chapel Hill, and grandchildren Elinor, Cecilia, Gabriella, and James. After graduating high school at age 16, Martin attended Dartmouth College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Long Island University, where he received a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering. After college, he fought in World War II, where as part of General Patton's advancing force he was one of the first to cross into Germany over the Rhine River at Remagen. He received a purple heart for injuries he suffered. After the war, he was President of H.M Rubin Co. in New York, which manufactured industrial products, and then moved west with his family and launched a career in the hotel business, where he served as General Manager of the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles, resolving numerous colorful incidents with celebrity guests, and as President of the Westgate Plaza Hotel in San Diego. In retirement he was an avid mid-80s golfer with a wicked hook and slice.
The Rubin family will receive family and friends for a visitation on Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at Walker's Funeral Home from 1:15 pm to 1:45 pm, followed by funeral services there at 2:00 pm. A reception will follow at the home of John and Jane Rubin at 313 Ironwoods Dr. in Chapel Hill.
