Obituary of Evelyn Lorena Morgan Hines

Please share a memory of Evelyn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Evelyn Lorena Morgan Hines (affectionately known as E.L. to her parents/Teenie to her godmother/and Lyn from college on) was born in Beaverdam Township (Clyde) N.C., on August 9, 1915, where her parents Ernest Luther Morgan, M.D. and Evelyn Louise Smith Morgan were staying with family in the cool mountains for her birth. Her parents then returned with her to Washington, D.C. where her father had his medical practice. She was brought up in and around the Washington area until 14, when her mother died and she and her little sister Marion were sent to live with her father's brother and his wife in Waynesville, N.C. She attended school in Haywood County until she was 17, then attended Mars Hill (Junior) College from 1932 until 1934, then entered the school of nursing at Rex Hospital from 1934 until 1937 and became a registered nurse. She was asked to be an instructor of nurses at Rex Hospital where she worked for a while until she married her college roommate's brother, Hugh Benjamin Hines, Jr. on June 3, 1939 and they moved to Kinston, N.C. where they both worked. High, an army reservist, was called into the army shortly before Pearl Harbor and they lived in several locations where he was posted such as Natches, MS and Palm Springs, CA. During that time, they had two children, Lorena Hollowell (Holly) and Charlotte Morgan, both born a Rex Hospital in Raleigh. When Hugh was sent overseas in 1944, Evelyn and daughters lived in Oriental, NC with his parents until he returned at the end of WWII. Evelyn and family then lived in Sanford, Jacksonville, Rocky Mount, and Greensboro, NC where Hugh was city manager of each city. Upon his death in 1962, she wanted to finish her degree and attended UNC-Chapel Hill for her B.A. in education and certificate in library science. She finished school in 1965 until she retired in the summer of 1980. Upon retirement she continued to enjoy her church, University Baptist, PEO sorority, bridge club, garden club, and also spent many a happy hour tending her flower garden. The family would like to thank her many friends for their cards and visits during her last year, and UNC Family Medicine (Reach), UNC Hospice, and her caregivers Talwo Shobande, Alice Dale, Mei-Yin Turner, and Omowumi Fanika. Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Charlotte of the home, and four nieces, Pandora Elliott of Chapel Hill, Shelley Romig (Gordon) of Clarkston, MI, Janet Flynn of Natchitoches, LA, and D'Ann Potts of Metairie, LA., in addition to many grandnieces and nephews, and their children. A service to honor the life of Evelyn will be held Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at Walker's Funeral Home of Chapel Hill, 120 W. Franklin St., with visitation prior to the service from 10:00 A.M. until 11: 00 A.M. A private interment will follow at Westminster Gardens and Crematory in Greensboro, NC.
