Mrs. Cates was truly like a member of our family. She was a devoted and dear friend to my grandmother, Maxine Freeland, and accompanied her to many family events after Maxine also lost her husband. She was kind enough to attend a family memorial held for my mother, Donna Freeland, last November in Wrightsville Beach. Having her there brought us all great comfort. My fondest memories of Mrs. Cates will always be time spent with her, my grandmother, and my mother at my mother's pool. Mrs. Cates always patiently watched my children's performances and enjoyed fellowship and a good laugh! She was a warm, bright woman who will be deeply missed. Nahale Freeland Kalfas Durham, NC

Mrs. Cates was my mentor teacher the first year I taught school in Orange County at Orange High School. She was very inspirational using her quiet demeanor and pleasant smile as I was learning about teaching. She had a wonderful sense of humor! My thoughts are with her family as they celebrate her life. There are so many students that she taught and was influential helping them to obtain jobs and teaching the skills they would need to perform their duties. Thank you for sharing your mother with us!
