I am a very old friend of Bruce from the days when he played with the "Church keys" in Warren, Minnesota at our homecoming dance. I had always hoped to reconnect with him someday just to let him know how important he was in my life. All my prayers go out to your family.

It was great sadness that I learned of Bruce's passing. He was such a wonderful persona and physician. I had the honor and pleasure of having been his colleague at Duke Regional and felt fortunate to come to consider him a friend as I had a chance to get to know him outside of work. He touched so many lives in a positive way not only as a surgeon but also as a person. I was touched by the sincere celebration of his live at the memorial service. He apparently touched folks all over the area as his name was submitted to be honored on All Saints Day at my church, University United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill. He will truly be missed.

What a wonderful man, he truly will be missed, not only by those he treated, but for so many of us that had the privilege of working with him. As a new nurse, he was a great teacher, so knowledgeable, he never hesitated to share all he knew (nor make you feel dumb when asking questions!). He was one of the reasons I have a love for Neuro pts! I recall a time he nearly made one of my preceptee cry because a pt. was crashing (ok maybe she shed a few tears) but after the pt. stabilized he asked if we were coming to listen to the "jam session" at the bar! He showed us that there is a time and place for all things. Not all work, Not all play-balance is key. I was sad when he left the Reg., but glad he was able to continue spreading his knowledge and help others. Not many Drs. like you left to guide us. You were definitely a class act Dr. K and I look forward to hearing the jam sessions when we meet again. R.I.P

I knew Dr Khilstrom many years ago when I was a drive thru teller for First Union bank and I always knew he was a special person but it wasn't till 2002 when I was a patient of his and he did back surgery on me for 3 Ruptured Dics that I found out how special of a doctor he was so in 2004 when I was diagnosed with a Benign Brain Tumor once again I had him as my surgeon and I can't say enough how wonderful and caring he was. He followed me for many years after that surgery with yearly MRI's and I was heartbroken when he left and went to the VA and I could no longer see him. I know he had a lot of patients but he had a way of making you feel like you were his only patient every time I saw him. He will be greatly missed!

Noelle and I send our condolences . I have known Bruce as a colleague, friend and consummate doctor. I never worried about patients I sent to Bruce. One of those was Noelle. Since she taught anatomy at UNC she and Bruce had fun discussing the anatomy of the cervical fusion he was to perform. When she awoke she was pain free for the first time in many months. If anyone could enjoy surgery Bruce made it possible.
Our community of physicians was made better by having Bruce among us.

Dear Pam and Family,
It breaks my heart that you have had such a tremendous loss. Bruce truly was one of the kindest, funniest, loving men I have ever met. I saw him shortly after his surgery and he sat and talked with me after his PT. I told him how sorry I was and how much I hated this for him and, per Bruce, he comforted me saying, "I really can't complain. I know what is going to happen but I have had a really great life. I have Pam and really great kids, I have lived long enough to see them through school and for the most part settled, I have seen grandchildren grow and I have enjoyed music and laughter. I really can't complain." He went on to say there were a few bucket list things he wanted to do quickly and for the most part he did them. He loved going to South Bend, to Notre Dame, to watch Cody play soccer! He was such an example for the rest of us and told me on more than one occasion how proud he was of Julie and Mike and the fine, engaged and caring children they had brought into the world. A world much better, not only for the skills he brought as a surgeon but for the family he leaves to carry on his legacy of love, kindness and concern. May God's hand touch you and comfort you. Dr. Kihlstrom was my jovial surgeon who I enjoyed working with when I came to live in the United States 10 years ago. He always like to sing for me his favorite song in the operating room and asked me to sing for him in Indian language. He learned many Indian words and his favorite were numbers in Hindi language. He would memorize all the numbers and words and use them to communicate during surgery. I enjoyed working with him and I will miss him very much!
Hearty Condolences to his beloved family. May the Lord give you strength and comfort during this difficult time.
Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord, May the perpetual light shine upon him , may his soul rest in peace, Amen.

So sorry for you all's loss. Dr. Kihlstrom was a wonderful person. He will most certainly be missed. I worked with him for many years at DRH. When I left DRH to start work at the VA, I felt a void. Then years later he began to practice at the VA. I asked him, "Did you follow me over here?" He just laughed and said you know it girl. He was a wonderful teacher and loved taking care of his patients. May comfort and peace belong to the family in this time of sorrow.

Pam and Family, my heart was saddened when I heard about the passing of Dr. Kihlstrom. I pray that God will comfort and strengthen you all.
Dr. K. or Dr. Brucie is what I called him was an excellent neurosurgeon, who loved to share his knowledge and teachings with the perioperative team. He loved caring for his patients and providing them with the best of care. I have enjoyed working with him for many years and always tried to stay ahead of him when circulating or scrubbing in his room, to provide efficiency, and help move his day along. He loved telling stories about his family, especially his grandchildren, and he loved to sing. I remember many times joining in singing with him and this really made our day. What a wonderful voice he had and he shared many stories with recording artist that he had met and sang with. I really enjoyed him inviting me to come and sing with he and his band at the Tavern, for which I accepted the invitations and had a blast of a time.
I know that he loved life, loved to travel, and loved his family. I will remember all of the times that I have worked with him and really him missed when he left DRH to go to the VA Hospital.
Rest in Peace Dr. K for great is your reward in Heaven.

When I tell people that Dr. Kihlstrom was a phenomenal mentor, they immediately reflect on how great of a physician and educator he was within the hospital and operating room. His love for life, his wife, his children, and his extended family was always on display and I will dearly miss hearing him speak about those things. My deepest sympathies to Pam and to the rest of their family. Bruce was proud of all the children and grandchildren, as he told me many times in phone calls. I was privileged to have stood by him on stage for almost four years during our performances with the Churchkeys during the '60's. The only differences of opinions we ever had were friendly ones. A great guy to play music with, and to hang out with as a real friend. He gave me quite a bit of neurological advice (I'm in ND), and told me that my MRI's were the only ones of all his patients that were on his home PC. I take that as quite an honor from a man of his stature who has helped so many others in his practice. We had a great visit at Cass Lake a few years ago, and were looking forward to another after the new motor-coach was ready, but sadly, that was not to be. I'll be keeping the whole family in my thoughts and prayers to get through these tough times.

I don't remember it, because I was only months old. But I'm 36 now, married 9+ years with two beautiful boys, living a life that most infants with hydrocephalus never get to experience. No blindness. No auditory disabilities. No disabilities at all, aside from a shunt behind my right ear, that's been there since the day Dr. Kihlstrom saved my life.
I just can't offer enough thanks. There just isn't enough gratitude for the man that allowed me the chance to be the man, son, brother, husband, father, friend, & pastor that I try to be every day.
Sincere prayers for his wife & family.

I was referred to Dr. Kihlstrom for some back problems I was having. I found him very easy to talk with and share my concerns. We finally decided on surgery as the only option left for me and had that done in January of 1992. I followed his advice, since I didn't want to have it done again, and have done great since that time. I know when I have overdone it and try to rest. I felt I had the best surgeon there was for my situation and I am so glad I was referred to him instead of someone else. I send my deepest sympathy to his family and friends. May God wrap His arms around you and hold you close during this sad and difficult time.
