Jayne Cason Mathis, December 31, 1925 - December 8, 2016
Jayne Cason Mathis, 90, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2016 at the DuBose Health Center in Chapel Hill, NC. Family and friends will remember her fondly as someone who always had a smile for others and who loved her family, fashionable clothes, the beach, chocolate, maps, sewing and hand-made crafts, music, dancing, sports and her daily breakfast of two extra-large fried eggs.
Born December 31, 1925 in Quincy, IL, Jayne was the second of five children in the family of the late James "Perry" Cason and Fern Parker Cason. She attended Culver-Stockton College, then moved to Washington D.C. in 1945 to work as a cartographer with the U.S. Geological Survey. Jayne married William Lowrey Mathis in 1949, and together they raised their five children in Northern Virginia. Following the passing of her husband of 53 years, Jayne moved to her current home in the Cedars of Chapel Hill, NC in 2004.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Cedars of Chapel Hill, The UNC Wellness Center Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, the DuBose Health Center, Hospice of Alamance-Caswell and her truly exceptional team of caregivers for the joy, comfort and fun they provided Jayne and the Mathis family over the past 12 years.
Left to cherish Jayne's memory are her children, Amanda Mathis Miller (David); Amy Webb (David); Peter Mathis (Nina Swusdipanee); Perry Mathis (Elisabeth); Anne Mandigo (Glen); nine loving grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her sister, Karen Murphy (Richard) of Lakeland, FL; her brother Robert Cason (Margaret) of Mobile, AL; her sister-in-law Marcella Cason of Mechanicsville, VA and nine nieces and nephews. Her sister and brother-in-law, Patricia Anderson (John), and her brother, James Cason, preceded her in death.
A Celebration of Jayne's Life is scheduled for Sunday, December 18, 2016 at 2pm in the Cedars of Chapel Hill ballroom at 100 Cedar Club Circle, Chapel Hill, NC.
