Sorely missed. Ariana and I were friends for more than 25 years. Also neighbors for most of that time. As readers and writers we shared many hours discussing books we had read and what we were writing. She published 7 books and numerous columns and opinion pieces. About 15 years ago she and I met up in England attended the week-long Writers Summer School in Derbyshire.
Until recent years she was an active participant in Shared Learning of Chapel Hill.

David and I send our condolences to the family of Ariana Mangum. We first got to know her when she came to live in Bray, Co. Wicklow, Ireland sometime in the 1980s. She became part of the parish there and we became friends. David was the Rector of Bray Parish (Anglican). We continued to exchange Christmas cards and news every year after she moved back to the US and we moved to another parish and now are in retirement living in Dublin. We still use a lovely casserole dish which she gave to us when she was leaving Bray.
We remember how she supported those who needed extra help with reading, writing and expressing themselves.
You are all in our prayers as you grieve the loss of a wonderful, gifted and courageous woman.

I always loved to see her in the library when she came in to check on Carlos the Mouse. She always had a smile and something friendly to say, She loved the children and made the rest of us feel appreciated, too. Pat Heath

I'm so sad. We had gotten rather close over the last few years. I had helped her with her research for her last book, held her hand when she was tired and even helped put on her new socks for her.
She was writing a story about my 35 year extended courtship, and the last time I saw her she said "I owe you a book".
I will miss her smile, her intelligence and her insights. She leaves the world a better place than she found it.
Thoughts go out to her daughters, whom she spoke of often.
Most sincerely,
Rick Heeren

She was such a wonderful lady and teacher. She took to my son, who has autism, they would talk about history and facts. She was a very good soul.
We are better for knowing her.
