Obituary of Edith Hawkins Davis

Edith Hawkins Davis, 91, passed away March 30, 2017, after a brief illness. Edith received her nursing degree from Watts School of Nursing and worked for several years as a nurse at Watts Hospital in Durham. Upon her marriage in 1951, she left her nursing career to become a full-time homemaker. She said many times that her training as a nurse was useful in raising five children. Until recent years, Edith was an active member of Mars Hill Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School and Bible School teacher, and for many years sang in the church choir. She served as a volunteer at Orange Congregations in Missions delivering Meals on Wheels for many years with her husband, Robert. Edith loved painting and spent many hours with her brushes and paints. She also very much enjoyed drying wild flowers and creating flower arrangements and notecards from the dried flowers. Edith was the daughter of the late William Walter and Lottie Rountree Hawkins. She is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Robert D. Davis; sisters, Nannie Odom, Sarah Norris, and Lottie Lynch; brothers, Willard, Frank and Alvin Hawkins. Edith is survived by her four daughters, Sue Davis Lawless (Thomas) of Raleigh; Faye Davis Granberry (John) of Mobile, AL; Lisa Davis Olsen (Jason) of Boston, MA; Amy Davis Johnson (Warren) of Durham; one son, Paul Michael Davis (Sharon) of Hillsborough; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Kenneth Hawkins (Carolyn), Warren Hawkins (Mary Lee), Fred Hawkins, Wade Hawkins (Shelby); sisters, Marie Lucas, Rachel Cole, and Peggy Terry (Nick). She is also survived by family members David Norris and Valerie Hawkins; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation and funeral service will be Monday, April 3, with visitation from 1:00 to 2:30 in the Mars Hill Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. The funeral service will be held in the church Sanctuary at 3:00. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
