My Dearest Allison,
We have been friends for 63 years. We met when we were 2 years old, and as the story goes, I hit you over the head with a stick. Not my finest moment, but you never held it against me and we became the best of friends, nevertheless. How you loved to tell that story!
You and I, we were children together. We ran the streets & woods of Midland Park together, inventing adventures wherever we roamed. We watched cartoons together (Flintstones!) and then we drew our own with highly convoluted (so we thought) story lines.
We went to our first day of school together. We saw each other nearly every day for the first 10 years of our lives.
We were teenagers together, sharing our favorite make-up tips from Seventeen magazine, making our own dresses for dances and parties, hanging on the phone for hours discussing the Beatles, our parents, our hopes, our dreams and boys, boys, boys.
We went off to college, we married our sweethearts, we became mothers, we worked, we raised our families. Then, we sent our children off to college, to work, and when they married, had children, we were grandmothers together.
MS robbed you of so much, but never your loving heart and warm sense of humor. You were an inspiration to us all. There won't be a day to come that I won't miss you. Rest In Peace, my dear. You are now free to run among the stars.
I love you forever.
Your BFF,
Kathi

Allison had a strong spirit even when her body failed her. She loved her family fiercely. It was wonderful to see the three of them joking about some silly little thing. Bill was always eating the strangest combination of foods just to make her laugh. And whenever she spoke about Austin, her face beamed. She was so proud of her son! Allison was ecstatic about being a grandmother, too. Raven brought her much comfort and joy.
Allison also loved her cats (Moose and Bart come to mind) and her dogs (Misty, for one) and her turtles and mice and fish and pet rats. There were probably other pets over the years. Their home was always open for more.
Allison so rarely spoke about her MS even when it landed her in the hospital with severe complications. She went through some extraordinarily tough times and endured many, many medical procedures. She was a tough cookie! Having MS for 40 years would be a fate that not many people could bear, but Allison showed those doctors that she was resilient!
It might not be widely known how brilliant Allison's intellect was. She tested very highly in school and had gone on to graduate work after college. She also spoke Spanish. She was a wonderful musician, too. She played flute, piccolo, horn, guitar, and dulcimer (to name a few).
Allison was always the beauty of the family. If you had seen her in the late '60 in her mini skirt and mod boots, her golden hair and her kohl-lined eyes, you would swear that she was a rock star.
All of her life, Allison enjoyed cooking. She spent many hours pouring over cookbooks and recommending recipes to friends and family. She took real pride in her craft. You could always strike up a conversation about what meals she had recently planned and what kinds of ingredients she used. She would sometimes grow the ingredients right in her yard, too!
One of Allison's great passions was computers. Not many people could follow the conversation about programs and coding and hardware when Allison, Bill and Austin started talking. They were out of most people's technical league. Allison was so intrigued by early computer linguistics and she'd laugh when the Mac spit out some crazy sentence about tribbles and Mr. Spock (she was a lifetime fan of Star Trek). She was very active on Facebook in the last few years and she had a wide circle of friends. She was also a fiend for Farmville and other digital games.
Allison was very blessed to have Bill at her side for so many years. He could have easily dropped out of the scene when she became ill, but that wasn't in his nature. He cared so tenderly for her and stood by her side even when she could no longer stand or even reach out her hand for him. Bill strove to make her smile and laugh. He drew crazy little cootie comics for her. He read her oddities from the Internet. He read Bart's mail to her. He sang her blues songs in that great baritone voice of his as he strummed on his guitar. They had a powerful love. One for the ages. And in her last hours, they took an afternoon nap together. Bill's heart broke when only one of them woke up again.
We will miss Allison. She was a unique person. Not always the easiest to get along with when she was a young girl, but she mellowed into the nicest woman you could ever meet. She kept her wits about her (and heaven help you if you crossed her because in a battle of wits you would definitely be at a disadvantage) and she kept her sense of humor. And she always shared her love.
