I worked with Judy almost 20 years at the UNC Campus (also earlier Student) Health Service. As President of the Medical Staff for 11 of those years I worked alongside Judy in caring for our students and found her always calm, insightful, fair, and most helpful and progressive in her thinking and management. She had a terrific sense of humor and was a true honor and joy to have as our Director. What a wonderful family I encountered at her funeral and celebration of her life on Sunday. I will continue to keep all of you, especially her children, in my prayers that our great God would comfort you and be close to you in these coming days. Greg Tuttle, M.D.

Dear family of Judy, I read with sadness of Judy's passing. Through my D. H. Lawrence activities I was a friend of the Cowans for years. I remember fondly several dinners at the Cowans' beautiful home and the Cowans' gracious hospitality in entertaining guests from near and far. My favorite memory of Judy is my taking a photo of her in front of Freud's cigar store in New Mexico, during one of the international DHL conferences. I can still picture her grin on that occasion--indeed, on all occasions. Keith Cushman and I continued our contact with Judy after Jim's death, with meals at a restaurant or at my house, but in recent years I could not reach her. As we now know, she spent her final years in Burlington. Regretfully I am not able to attend the memorial service on Sunday the 23rd at 2pm. I so wish I could be present because Judy and Jim meant so much to me, as to other "Lawrentians." You have my deepest condolences. Fondly, Judith

I owe the fact that I have now have three 20-something boys to Dr. Cowan. As a graduate student at UNC in 1984, I went to Student Health Services to get birth control pills. Dr. Cowan wanted to do a physical exam at the time (because it had been a while since I had one). What she found stunned us both. To make a long story short, I had one ovary engulfed by a tumor; she immediately sent me to my hometown ob-gyn and after ovarian surgery, the doctors were able to save part of the ovary with the tumor and all of the other. I remember sending her a thank-you note after I had my first child because without her expertise and advice, that child may have never happened. Godspeed, Dr. Cowan. Anne Hastings
