Hello,
I *just* learned today that David died. This makes me so sad!
He was quite wonderful to me when I was the health reporter at WUNC and later, when I launched a publication (NC Health News). He was always willing to pick up the phone and give me the straight information on a pharmacy topic. I totally trusted his judgment and knowledge, and appreciated his wisdom and sense of humor.
I hope all these tributes are a comfort,
Rose Hoban, Editor, NC Health News

Dear Dana, Amy, and Susan
Our deepest sympathy to you and to your families for your loss. We are members of the congregation at Duke Chapel, and in that community, often enjoyed David's friendship, comments that he shared with us based on his vast knowledg of his profession, and his good humor. We also remember his kindness in sending birthday cards to congregation members as a welcome surprise, and his warm Christmas cards, filled with news of his family, of which he was so proud. May your memories of him stay in your heart forever. We are sure he has taught you well, and that is a gift.
In friendship,
Linda and Ed Karolak

I remember when David first moved to Chapel Hill, in fact I helped him move in along with my dad. My dad was Lee Werley Asistant Dean of Pharmacy School. I was in business school and needed a class so I call my dad and he said you must take a pharmacy course so he could be my advisor. I took David's Pharmacy Law and then decided to transfer into pharmacy. We were both jokers and so got along great. Besides my dad, David was the other pharmacist I looked up to.
I will really miss you but have wonderful memories. Thank you.
I was at a Duke Hospice bereavement camp for children so I was unable to attend.

Dear Dana, Amy, and Susan,
I had the pleasure of working with your dad during his last few years at the NC Board of Pharmacy. I was the public member on the board for 10 years. Soon after I started my time on the board, we attended a national meeting in New Orleans. I was very impressed with his stature in the national pharmacy community. Everyone spoke highly of him and respected his views on pharmacy issues. On a personal level, I appreciated him for his integrity and willingness to speak candidly about what was best for the citizens of North Carolina. And, of course, I was always happy to receive photos he had taken, copies of his letters to the editor, and Christmas cards. I will miss him.
I am sure you have many wonderful memories of your parents. Hang on to them. A song I heard some years ago had the following words, "Every person carves a spot and fills it with life." David Work did that abundantly!
Wynda and I wish you the best in the future.

Mr. Work was a loving, kind, caring man, not to mention a joker! Not a day went by here at Champions where he wouldn't have a smile on his face regardless of situations.
Mr. Work was always "STABLE"!!! Discussing Politics were some of our best conversations, WHY, Because MR. work had no filter :), Its straight to the point with him no in between! May David Rest In Peace and allow his legacy to continue!

I am so incredibly grateful for the personal memories I have of Dr. Work, from being welcomed to every NCBOP Christmas party from ages 11-22, to tagging along with him to Carolina basketball games and getting tickled as he joyfully dug into his staple popcorn bucket, to family trips (I can remember a 4yo Susan!), to the academic leader with poise and a sharp, unsurpassable wit. Dr. Work, you will be missed by many, I know, but your spirit is ever present!

Dr. Work was an icon in the world of North Carolina pharmacy. I have wonderful memories of our law class while in pharmacy school and will never forget his guidance and character while serving our profession with the NC Board of Pharmacy. He never failed to demonstrate the best of what pharmacists are meant to be. He will be missed but his legacy will always be with us. My sympathy to the entire family.

I would not be in business if not for your father. He took a phone call at his home during halftime of the UNC-Georgetown basketball NCAA Championship game in 1982 to answer some time sensitive questions and offer some insightful advice to me as I planned to open Spears Pharmacy in Roanoke Rapids, NC. I have never forgotten his guidance and patience that night 35 years ago and it has helped drive me in my endeavor to emulate his outstanding presence as a human being and promoter of the Practice of Pharmacy. He was a wonderfully nice guy (with a subtle wit and sense of humor) and I felt like he cared about his students and our futures as well as the future of Pharmacy. I don't enter Beard Hall without thinking of him. A huge loss for me and the profession of Pharmacy. May God bless you and comfort you in your loss. I will be making a donation to our local Planned Parenthood in his memory. RIP Dr. Work. Larry Spears Class of 1974

Oh, how I had both a deep sense of respect and a healthy sense of fear as his student. I always, always think of him when I am faced with an ethical decision as a pharmacist. I feel so fortunate to have had him as my professor and my BOP director. He was the face and the voice and the symbol of all of us as pharmacists in North Carolina for so many years. May you, as his family, know he gave us as students the foundation to do our best and be our best as pharmacists in North Carolina.

David Work was a Giant of a Man...one of the most learned and decent men I have ever known. As the Board's Public Member from 1995-2005, I learned so much from him. Eventually, he served on my Association's Hospice Foundation Board and I am so proud to have called him a friend! I will miss his articles, his keen sense of humor and I send thoughts and prayers to Susan, Amy and Dana and all...and will support my member Lower Cape Fear Hospice in his memory. As Secretary to Mr. Work, he was my boss at the Pharmacy Board for over 25 years. He was the best boss anyone could ask for. A gentle spirit who I admired tremendously. I typed many articles for him and even in his retirement, he kept up his writings!! He was truly one of a kind who loved his family and his profession of pharmacy. Dana, Amy, and Susan and families, my condolences to all of you. He will surely be missed. Carol Smith

David was one of the first people I interacted with when I came to NC 40 years ago to work at the AHEC in Wilmington. He was always helpful, professional and just a genuinely nice guy! I worked with him on a number of occasions over those 40 years and it was always a positive experience. He helped make NC the beacon of pharmacy practice it is today. I am pleased and honored to have been a friend. He will surely be missed.
