Dear Family of Tom, I was so sorry to hear of Tom's passing. And I know he would have hated to see a reference to his "passing." He was such a gifted communicator - calling it as he saw it. We were colleagues as MDC for years, and Tom could be trusted to find a way to describe current reality in clear terms - whatever it was. I found his passions for poetry and France inspirational - and I think about how he honed in on those when trying to get clear about what is important to me. Condolences to Tom's family. I met Tom in poetry writing classes at Duke Institute for Learning in Retirement( known as DILR then but now called OLLI at Duke). He was a quiet gentle man who wrote deep wonderful poetry. I was always amazed at how he incorporated so many ideas.He had a great sense of humor brought out in one of his poems "Mother's On The Ceiling".Later, like the leader he was, he organized a group to do poetry reading at various Durham book stores and a few other sites. Elizabeth, you know what a good friend your dad was to me. I am extremely saddened to learn on the OLLI website that he died yesterday. Please, when you can, tell me what happened. I had assumed his health was improving. I am still in Maine, where he visited me a couple of years ago. He took many classes from me, and we went to many ball games together. I leave Maine tomorrow, but will not be back in Durham in time for the service.
