Obituary of Betty Sue Whitfield

Betty Sue Duncan Whitfield died at her home on Wednesday, October 23, 2013. She was raised on Homestead Road, Chapel Hill. She retired in 1984 after thirty-six years with John Umstead Hospital. She and her husband were owners of the Hollow Rock County Store on Erwin Road for over twenty-five years. She was an avid Tar Heel Fan. She was instrumental in organizing the New Hope Improvement Association in the community. In 2009 she received the Clarence F. Korstian Award in recognition of her exemplary support of Duke Forest. Betty Sue was a member of North Chapel Hill Baptist Church (formerly McDuffie Memorial) since joining in 1936 except for a couple of years. She was an active member until her health prevented her from attending. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanford Whitfield, his parents Glen and Pauline Whitfield, her parents John and Missie Duncan, five brothers Credup, Venable, James, Lewis and Cecil Duncan, and two sisters Lib Knight and Margie Hallsted. She is survived by her brother Leonard and wife Mary Anne of Mebane, her sister Mary Ruth Burrus and husband Jim of Cary, twelve nephews - James Burrus, David Hallsted, Tommy Knight, Gregory, Danny, David, Johnny, Tommy, Bo, Jeffrey, Steven, and Larry Duncan, eight nieces - Carolyn Gilliland, Carolyn McLearie, Suzanne Watkins, Amy Cruickshank, Cathy Reeves, Karen Lenox, Ann Scofield, and Bobbie Lockhart, and two sisters-in-law Joyce and Ruth Duncan. The family is grateful for the wonderful care she received from the caregivers from Senior Helpers and from Duke Hospice Care. The family will receive friends at Walker's Funeral Home, 120 Franklin Street from 6:00PM to 8:00PM on Friday, October 25, 2013. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 3:00PM at North Chapel Hill Baptist Church, 7707 NC 86 South, Chapel Hill. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
