I write for the Saturday Evening Post too and the moment I read Val's essays she quickly became one of my favorite writers. I'm sad that I never got to know her personally but we have her writing (including her terrific memoir!) and her incredible life to remember her by. My condolences to her family, her friends, and all of the students she touched.

I am so sorry to hear of Val Lauder's death, but what a life she had! I was a student of hers at UNC, like so many hundreds of others, and feel fortunate to say that we occasionally corresponded for years afterward. She was such a fine teacher and kind human being, and she taught me things I still use today at The Charlotte Observer when I was in that class (particularly about the value of doing "your homework" long before your main interview with a subject). Val was the best sort of journalism teacher, as she really could write and had the clips and anecdotes to prove it, and that made a lot of difference. She deeply cared about her students -- 25 years after I wrote it, she emailed me once about a story I wrote in her class (never published anywhere else) that was about me and a friend playing tennis in the snow. She was a wonderful person and teacher, and my condolences go to her family and friends... Scott Fowler
