Barbara Ann Nettles-Carlson, 82, of Chapel Hill, NC died at Carol Woods Retirement Community on Monday, June 5. She was born August 17, 1934 in Paterson, NJ to the late William Joseph Nettles Jr and Ida Victoria Carlson Nettles. She grew up primarily in Atlanta, GA and also lived in Houston,TX, Mexico City, Pensacola, FL and Brigham City, UT. She attended Duke University and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill Schools of Nursing and Public Health and Indiana University-Indianapolis. Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 32 years, Curtis Perry McLaughlin, and daughter Viki Bibb Lee (Roddy) of Asheville, granddaughters Kristin Richardson (Daniel) of Greenville SC, and Chelsea Lee Smith (Zafar) of Townsville Australia. She was proud to be called GiGi by 4 great grandchildren - Scarlett Bermudez and Zorion, Zavian and Coralie Smith. She was predeceased by her sons Wyatt, David and Alan Bibb for whom she continuously provided loving care. She is survived and loved by her sisters Vicky Eby, Lawrence, KS, and Margaret O'Reilly, Gulf Breeze , FL and four nephews and their families and was a caring and supportive stepmother to Curt's four children and their families. Barbara retired as Associate Professor of Nursing and a nurse practitioner at UNC-CH. She was firmly committed to clinical practice by faculty. She served as a board member for Club Nova, NAMI Orange County, and NAMI NC and openly advocated for individuals and families dealing with mental illness. She was a faithful chorister for many decades with Choral Society of Durham and Binkley Baptist Church and an avid reader, traveler and gardener. Her memorial service will be Sunday, June 11 at 3:00 pm at Binkley Baptist Church, 1712 Willow Drive, Chapel Hill, NC 27514. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Club Nova Community, 103 West Main Street Carrboro, NC 27510 or the Binkley Music Ministry Fund.
