Obituary of Edward Oscar Shrieve

Edward O. Shrieve, age 77 years, passed away Thursday, November 15 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC. Ed was born in Steubenville, OH on October 24, 1935 to the late Arthur and Maxine Shrieve. In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his brother William (Butch) Shrieve. Ed grew up in Steubenville, OH and graduated from Carnegie Mellon University, with a bachelor's degree in Industrial Management and obtained a master's degree in Economics from NC State. He was an army veteran, stationed in Okinawa, Japan during the Korean War as a Morse-Code radio operator. He retired from Corning, Inc. in Corning, NY after 31 years of service and lived in several states throughout his life including Ohio, New York, Indiana, and North Carolina. He also volunteered with the Red Cross Disaster Relief, and was a Mason. He loved to travel, to sail, and to play bridge but he was his happiest when he was spending time with his family. Ed is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ruth J. Shrieve; daughter, Sheryl Crane and husband, Harold, of Arden, NC; son, (Edward) Keith Shrieve and wife Laura of Suffield, OH; daughter Denise Shortino and husband David of Chapel Hill, NC; son David Shrieve of Durham, NC; and five grandchildren: Edward Crane, Stephanie and Scott Shortino, Kayla and Jarrod Shrieve. He is also survived by his brothers: James of Bloomingdale, OH and Dean of Whitehall, OH. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 19, 2012 at Epworth United Methodist Church in Durham with Rev. Hope Vickers officiating. Visitations will be held on Sunday, November 18th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Walker's Funeral Home in Chapel Hill and Monday, November 19th from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Epworth United Methodist Church in Durham. Burial will follow at the Memorial Cemetery in Chapel Hill. Memorial contributions may be made to the Epworth United Methodist Church, 3002 Hope Valley Rd, Durham, NC 27707.
