Florene Dunn Funk, born on Easter Sunday, 1924, passed away on March 8, 2021 at the AuthoraCare Hospice Home in Burlington. Florene was a native of Mebane, North Carolina, the sixth of eight children born to Rudy Tate and Caroline Smith Dunn. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward and her son, John. She is survived by her son, Ed Funk and his wife Yvonne of Graham, her brother Jerry Dunn and his wife Barbara of Burlington, her sister-in-law Betty Dunn of Raleigh, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Florene attended West Market Street United Methodist Church in Greensboro and University United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill before moving to Homeplace of Burlington in 1990.

Flo is remembered by her many friends as a devout Methodist, a proud Democrat and an avid Tar Heel fan. At age 18, she left Elon College in the spring of 1942 following her freshman year and shortly after Pearl Harbor to land a job with the Department of the Interior in Washington, DC where she worked for the remainder of the war. She and her New England husband began their married life together in NYC before moving to Greensboro. They enjoyed vacations to many National Parks including overnight rafting adventures down the Colorado River. Flo was also able to make an exciting mid-life excursion to Europe. She was an accomplished pianist who accompanied many church choral practices and musical events. After Ed’s unfortunate death in 1984, she later moved to Chapel Hill where she enjoyed playing bridge at the Chapel Hill Senior Center. She also loved providing her special deviled eggs for family gatherings and UNC Field Hockey tailgates. She enjoyed her most recent years at Homeplace of Burlington but of all the places she lived during her long and fulfilling life, she most loved her hometown of Mebane and truly cherished her vivid childhood memories of growing up near downtown Clay Street. She will be interred at Oakwood Cemetery in a private service at a later date.
