Obituary of Carol Wharton Page

Please share a memory of Carol to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Carol Wharton Page, 87, passed away at the Arbor of Galloway Ridge, Pittsboro, NC on Wednesday, February 24, 2021.

Carol Annetta Wharton was born in Washington, DC on December 9, 1933, to Claude Wharton and Eva Barker Wharton. Carol grew up in Washington, DC with her older sister Ann, and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. Carol attended Syracuse University where she met her future husband Howard Page while playing bridge at a fraternity-sorority mixer, beginning a relationship and bridge habit that would continue for nearly sixty years. After Carol graduated in 1955, they were married in Washington, DC, and Carol joined Howard at USMC Air Station, Cherry Point, NC. Their son Stephen Jeffrey (aka Son #1) was born while they were stationed there.

Carol and Howard continued their journey back at Syracuse University, where Carol managed their growing family - now including David Scott (aka Son #2) - while Howard pursued graduate studies. Carol and Howard moved to the Endicott, NY area for Howard’s job with IBM, where they added Philip Howard (aka Son #3) to their family. Carol always made the best of any situation she found herself in, but was always willing to explore new opportunities (especially in a warmer climate). A few subtle hints later, she and Howard relocated to Charlotte, NC where Howard joined IBM’s new lab.

Carol thrived in the Charlotte environment. Now an empty nester, Carol pursued a rigorous three year course in Interior Design at Central Piedmont Community College. After graduation Carol took up a fulfilling career at A. Hoke Ltd. in Charlotte, pursuing her passion of connecting Charlotte’s interior designers with goods to create beautiful, livable spaces for their clients. Carol’s interest in interior design was not limited to the present; she served as a docent to the Mint Museum in Charlotte and enjoyed taking visiting family and friends to some of the original homesteads in the Charlotte area.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Loomis Page in 2015. Carol is survived by her sons Stephen Jeffrey Page of Syracuse, NY, David Scott Page (Kazuko Maeda) of Austin, TX, and Philip Howard Page, of Chapel Hill, NC; as well as three grandchildren, Lloyd Wharton, Lionel Howard and Linette Carol Page of Austin, TX.

The Page family will receive visitors at Walker’s Funeral Home (120 W. Franklin St., Chapel Hill) from 3PM to 5PM on Monday, March 1, 2021. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation (see link on the left).

The Page family is under the care of Walker's Funeral Home of Chapel Hill.
