Obituary of Richard Lee King

Richard Lee King Sr. 88, of Mebane passed away unexpectedly Saturday January 30, 2021, at his residence.
A native of Mebane, he was the son of Albert Lee “Skeets” King and Merle Clayton King, both deceased.
Richard graduated from Mebane High School, class of 1950, where he starred in sports, was Class President and a popular student.
He retired from Western Electric with 37 years of service, having worked both the Burlington and Winston Salem facilities. The company also sent him to work at various sites around the country assisting the US Army in the installation of the Safeguard Missile System in the late 1950s.
After retirement he spent many happy hours tending his large garden, following his beloved New York Yankees and UNC Tarheels and reading. He was a knowledgeable conversationalist on almost any subject. He loved movies and was an authority on them, able to recite cast members and dialogue on hundreds of classic films. For most of his life he was an avid and skilled hunter and fisherman.
Richard knew and loved the Lord Jesus and his home church Mebane United Methodist. He was a kind and gentle soul, a generous and loving neighbor and a friend to many, leaving good memories with all he met.
He is survived by his children Debra Holt (Eddie), Richard L. “Ricky” King Jr. (Susan) and David King (Sheliah), 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild and his brother Donald King (Sheila), several nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service was held in the Chapel at Walker’s Funeral Home of Mebane by Rev. Ken Hall Jr. on February 6, 2021.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mebane United Methodist Church, 200 South Fourth Street, Mebane, NC 27302.
