I'm just by sheer chance now learning of the inimitable Al Rabil's death. I was a lucky teacher in his 1996 NEH Institute at NYU,"Worlds of the Renaissance". He and Janet were tireless, generous, and joyful during those several weeks in NYC. I kept in touch for a number of years after that, and even visited Al and Janet at their home in Chapel Hill a few years later, but eventually fell out of touch. I shouldn't have. What a special person he was!

Al Rabil changed my life in the 1970s, when at the age of 21 I tried to put a troubled teenage life behind me and enrolled at Old Westbury. He and John Sevier took me under their wings and I dove into critical historical, religious and social thought. My wife and I babysat for Al and Janet's kids. There were no grades at Old Westbury and no majors--I was in Al and John's Comparative History, Ideas & Cultures program. When Al suggested I go to graduate school I asked that grades be assigned by my instructors to my classes and got all As. That was 99% the result of Al's mentoring. I ended up with a Ph.D. and a college teaching career (which I later changed, but that's another story). I'll never forget Al and Janet's kindnesses.

I have wonderful memories of the 2001 NEH Institute Al Rabil organized on A Literature of Their Own? Women Writing: Venice, London, Paris 1550-1700. What an extraordinary and rich seminar. I treasure Al’s generosity, organizational skills, and vision. A tremendous legacy for which words are lacking. Anne Larsen

Dr. Al Rabil and I served on several committees during my tenure at the SUNY College at Old Westbury. I will always remember Al as a kind person who sought the best solutions to the many issues that we confronted. Al was a committed educator who spoke with a soft voice but articulated clear ideas that were always convincing. I thank Al for being a supportive and great colleague. May the college be blessed with more faculty-members like Al who will always look for the best ways to solve problems. Thanks for everything Al.

When I was a new faculty member at Old Westbury, I served on the Tenure Committee, where Al was the chair, for several years. After discussing candidates' files, we took turns writing the letters that summarized the evidence presented, our discussion and our recommendation to the administration about whether to tenure and promote our colleagues. Writing was not a high priority in my field of physical chemistry, and Al taught me how to be a writer during those years. He managed to be kind and supportive, while being ruthless in his criticism. I credit Al with whatever writing ability I developed, and I never told him. Only at Old Westbury, could a poet teach a chemist to write beautiful personnel letters!
