Lela Veasey Garrett peacefully passed away on November 19, 2020 in the comforting care provided at Brookshire Peak Nursing Center in Hillsborough NC. Lela was born in Durham, NC on November 14, 1928 the daughter of Sterling S. and Julia Spivey Veasey. Her parents instilled in her a sweet spirit and a love of all things sweet.
Lela lived and loved all in her life in Durham before moving to Brookshire in 2016. She graduated from Hope Valley School and took classes at Croft Business School. She worked as a bookkeeper for Cole’s Sausage and was a greeter at Duke Chapel. She also worked in the church office at Yates Baptist Church and the child development center. She later worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield until retirement.
Lela was an active lifelong member of Yates Baptist Church. She enjoyed keeping the nursery and her role as a Cub Scout Den Mother. She made lifelong friends with her Sunday School class and cherished the entire congregation.
Lela was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years Ernest Garrett, Jr.; brothers Watson, Sidney, and Sterling Veasey Jr., and sisters Ruth Parrish and Paige Briggs. Lela is survived by her brother David (Barbara) Veasey of Durham, son Stephen (Sue) Garrett of Hatteras and grandson Chad, and daughter Betty Garrett Crossman of Durham.
A funeral and celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday November 22, 2020 at Yates Baptist Church with Pastor Christopher Ingram officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:30 pm.
