Obituary of James Russell Rogers Jr.

James Russell Rogers, Jr., known to family and friends as Skip or Jim, died suddenly on Saturday, December 15th at home in Chapel Hill. Jim was the son of the late Lillian Nunn Nanton of Chapel Hill and James Russell Rogers, Sr., of Philadelphia. He was the husband of Maureen Rogers (nee O'Dea) and father of Jay Edward Rogers. Jim (Skip) grew up among a large extended family north of Chapel Hill. He was an avid Duke basketball fan and a voracious reader. He was a dedicated and active runner and cyclist. Jim graduated from Chapel Hill High School in 1967 and later received a BA in Economics from Ohio Wesleyan University. He worked in management at Kmart in Ohio, Michigan, and North Carolina for over 25 years. For the past 10 years, Jim has been at Harris Teeter in Chapel Hill. Jim is survived by wife Maureen and son Jay of Chapel Hill, brother Walter (Karen) of Desert Springs, California, nephew Rik of Oakland, California, Aunt Effie Merritt of Chapel Hill and many cousins and friends. Visitation will be Thursday, December 20th at 12:00 noon at St. Paul AME Church in Chapel Hill followed by a memorial service at 1:00pm.
