I knew Joyce because of our work together for many years as elected leaders in Chapel Hill. She was always polite, often bemused, and very clear about her commitment to environmental protection. Our community learned a lot from Joyce, not the least of which was how to be polite in the face of criticism and skepticism. But more importantly, how to think about our responsibility individually to be good stewards of the environment. I'll miss Joyce, but I'll always keep in mind her environmental ethic as part of my way of living.
