Obituary of Bill Carlton Terry

ORANGE Dr. Bill C. Terry, Professor Emeritus CHAPEL HILL — It is with profound sadness that the family of Dr. Bill C. Terry announces his passing away on Saturday, February 16, 2013. He died peacefully around his family, after battling extended illness. Dr. Terry is survived by his wife, Barbara D'zan-Terry; his son, Carlton; daughter-in-law, Wendy Terry; step daughters, Laurin Haupt and Nicole Rollins; step son, Justin Dzan. Dr. Terry was the proud grandfather of seven children. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Erika Kraft Terry; and his parents, Jesse Terry and Mabel Burke Terry; as well as his beloved aunt, Allie May Simpkins, who recently died at the age of 97. After graduating from the University of Tennessee School of Dentistry in 1954, Dr. Terry continued a prestigious career in the Navy. Dr. Terry was one of the first Naval Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in Vietnam serving on the USS Repose, AH-16 servicing all maxillofacial war injured patients. Dr. Terry received the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Unit Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. Upon retiring from the Navy with the rank of Captain, he joined the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry as Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Director of Resident Training. He retired from the university in 1995. Dr. Terry will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched. He was a humble man of remarkable character with varied talents. He was a man of integrity; an unpretentious man who enjoyed fishing, travel and the outdoors. May his memory be a light for all who knew and loved him. Arrangements are with Walker's Funeral Home, Chapel Hill. A memorial service to celebrate Dr. Terry's life and work will be held at The Chapel of the Cross, 304 E.
